LUCY
I’ve dealt with the worst of humanity. I’ve survived the unthinkable.
I’ve been abused and abandoned. I have given all I had and received the
bare minimum in return.
Nothing can scare me anymore. I’ve worked in retail.
Lucy clutched a small suitcase as her taxi stopped outside a dirt track
leading into a dense forest. Mellow sunlight filtered through the canopy of
budding spring foliage, casting golden hues over the path. She put on a
brave face, hiding behind a strained smile, but panic still knotted her
stomach.
“You sure you want me to drop you here, miss?” the driver asked,
turning around. “Ain’t nothing around here for miles. This track leads
nowhere. I would know––lived ‘round here all my life.”
“Yes, thank you. Someone will be meeting me at the end.” She shot him
a look, a frown knitting her brow, then re-checked the creased paper on
which she’d written the rections dictated to her over the phone. This was
the right place.
Reaching inside her faded brown leather handbag, Lucy counted out the
fare, leaving only a handful of change—not enough for a return trip. Not
that she had anywhere to go back to.
Sometimes throwing yourself into the void with reckless abandon was
the only way forward.
She pushed the car door open. It creaked in protest, cautioning her not to
leave, but she ignored it and watched the taxi make a U-turn and leave only
a cloud of dust.
The tree-shaded path led her through bush that crept along its sides,
twisted, finger-like branches snagging on Lucy’s skirt and untamed
chestnut-and-bleach waves. She brushed them off, focusing on the birds’
distant singing–– a pleasant change from the constant hum of Houston.
Inhaling the raw, earthy scent of rain-soaked ground, she could almost
taste the faint aroma of wild lavender. Healing. Soothing, but not enough to
ease her worries. She brought up possible scenarios of things going wrong.
Who knew what was hiding among ancient tree trunks layered with velvety
coverings of moss.
Serial killers, bears…handsome fae lords from the countless novels on
her bookshelf? She scoffed. This was Texas; it was definitely serial killers.
On the bright side, if I die here, I won’t have to worry about bills.
Dwelling on that strangely comforting thought, Lucy found herself at the
end of the path with a wrought iron gate guarding the road ahead. It towered
above her, threatening to crumble into a rusty pile of dust if she dared to
move it. She peered through the twisted vines consuming the metal bars,
but the thick foliage obscured the building behind it.
“Hi, I’m Lucy. Here for the job…” she whispered as she squeezed
through the tight gap in the gate. “Hello! A pleasure to meet you. I’m
Lucille.” Another forced smile tensed her face; it all seemed so easy in
practice. “Greetings. I’m—I’m—”
