LIFE AS WE KNOW IT
Monday morning was cold, the leaden gray sky swollen and
bruised. Pounding rain crashed against the cabin’s windows in
heavy sheets as the wind, which had only grown stronger overnight, hissed
through the trees, making the forest beyond sound like a nest of snakes.
Cade Colter stared out the kitchen window at the narrow muddy path
that wound its way to Crimson Lake, surprised that Brooks hadn’t woken
him for their usual jog, storm be damned. Brooks was a health nut of the
highest order and no mere deluge would keep him from his early morning
run – and it probably hadn’t; he knew his younger brother well enough to
know there was no way Cade was going outside for anything today. Brooks
had no doubt gone jogging without him.
And Cade was glad. He had the day off – the bookstore, Langley’s
Literary Labyrinth, was closed on Mondays – and he wanted nothing more
than to be alone with Samantha, who had Mondays off as well.
Samantha Corbett had moved into the cabin with Cade and Brooks
nearly a year ago, after what Cade now thought of as The Dark Days – and
they had been dark. Dark and terrifying. Even now, Cade shuddered. He
tried not to think about those times.
Things were better now, and that’s what he tried to focus on. Even
though he’d worried that Brooks might come to resent a third person in the
house, Samantha’s presence had proved no obstacle at all. The three of
them were good friends, and a woman in the house was good for both
brothers. Samantha, for all her sweetness, kept them in line. No longer was
Brooks allowed to leave apple cores lying around, nor was it okay for Cade
to leave his towel on the bathroom floor. Even Sir Purrcival, Cade’s now-
chubby black-and-white cat, was benefitting, receiving an abundance of
daily treats and attention, and never having to suffer the indignity of using a
less-than-freshly-scooped litter box. Cade wondered how they’d ever
managed to live without Samantha.
He smiled. He was happy in Crimson Cove. He felt he’d lived here his
entire life and the little mountain town seemed to feel the same way. Even
the stormy days here were cozy, the smell of rained-on pine comforting.
Nothing could bruise the beauty of Crimson Cove – nothing, except perhaps
…
Vampires.
The word still sent a chill through him. Even after all this time, he had
trouble wrapping his mind around the reality of monsters.
But not all of them are monsters. He was thinking of local health spa
proprietor Michael Ward, and Winter, his big, blond, grinning right-hand
man. Winter and Michael were Cade’s friends. They were the good guys,
undead or not.
But the other vampires, those like Gretchen VanTreese …
The name sent a surge through him and Cade shuddered, his mind
involuntarily casting back to last year.
He flinched when warm hands touched his bare sides from behind.
“Why so jumpy?” Samantha rested her cheek against his back, her
shower-dampened hair giving him another little shock.
“I didn’t hear you come in.”
