“FUCK ME,” I muttered under my breath, glaring at Miranda and running a
hand through my short black hair. It was three-thirty, and she was still at it.
We hadn’t even stopped for lunch. My stomach growled in commiseration
over my meager breakfast of cornflakes. One of those creamy thighs that
Miranda strutted around on would be pretty tasty right now, I thought with
a devilish smirk. Maybe with barbecue sauce.
The lone guard beside me outside Tiffany’s looked empathetic as my
stomach growled again. I nodded and rolled my eyes. He snorted a laugh.
I sighed once more in exasperation and looked around, wondering for
about the thousandth time today how a senator from Iowa who owned a
middle-of-the-road construction company could keep pace with Miranda’s
spending habits, which included places like this and Bulgari and Louboutin
and Alexander McQueen.
Miranda had blithely spent seventeen thousand
dollars so far on this trip, and all she’d bought were some shoes, earrings,
and a watch. It blew my mind. For a man who supposedly started poor and
was a self-professed ‘splinter-head construction guy,’ Mitchell Reichert
supported Miranda in a way that defied belief. But then again, they could
afford my fee, so I couldn’t bitch too much.
I swept the passers-by outside the store once more and spotted a fellow
I’d seen a few times. He was paying way too much attention to the senator’s
wife. Of course, it could be that Miranda was gorgeous and grabbed the eye,
which she was and did with her Greek column legs, raven black hair, and
deep brown, almond-shaped eyes. But this was the fourth time I’d seen him
today paying special attention to Miranda, and he didn’t fit in well at the
upscale mall, sauntering around in a nondescript dirty brown hoodie,
heavily worn Lee jeans, and cheap, ragged sneakers.
As soon as he saw me looking at him, he tucked his mid-length,
unkempt beard and dark brown eyes further into his hoodie and moved on.
Yeah, that’s right, I thought. Just keep on truckin’, fella.
“Friend of yours?” The Tiffany’s guard asked.
I shook my head, lips pursed in irritation. “Nope. And if he doesn’t stop
eyeballing my client, he’s going to be looking for his teeth. That’s the fourth
time he’s scoped her today.”
“Want me to call Security?”
“No. He hasn’t done nothin’ but look at a pretty woman. I don’t want to
harass him for that.”
“Suit yourself,” the guard said and resumed watching the rest of the
mall walkers.
Truth was, though, the guy was really setting off my spidey-sense,
almost to distraction. Everything about the man had been wrong, from his
clothing to the fact that he wasn’t carrying any parcels or bags. He hadn’t
bought so much as a soda since I’d first seen him hours ago. It was like he
was waiting for something.
