Gus Miller
‘Here lies Gus Miller. A first-class liar who we all know now died a
virgin with his ribs in pieces.’
I thought of my tombstone when Kill hit the puck squarely in my
ribcage, and even with all the gear on, I could hear the crack of my bones
suffering from the contact.
“Sorry, Gus!” my best friend apologized, already skating away after
that ridiculous move. If I weren’t already used to the blows, I would throw
my stick at his head.
“Now you want to be polite?” Coach Paul shouted from outside the
ice rink, his voice hoarse from all the scolding over the last few days. “You
should think about apologizing before trying to cut off Wayne Colleman’s
son’s fingers!”
Well… he had a point.
“Faster, Richard,” I commanded from the goal, not giving myself
time to feel the pain of the impact and preparing myself for the play that
was being set up in the middle of the track.
As a goalkeeper, action and reaction were my best friends. Reading
each player’s movements and being agile enough to defend the goal was the
fundamental skill. Even at eight in the morning.
That explained why we were winning 4-0 against the reserves.
Elijah Moralez came towards me with the puck, his eyes focused, I
could see the thirst for goals on his face, but none of that intimidated me.
He played with strength and precision; however, I was much better and
intercepted without any effort. The tall boy with shaved hair snorted,
swearing in frustration.
He didn’t even come close to scoring the goal.
My grandmother, Greta Miller, the first female commentator in
hockey history and the greatest sports critic I knew, would have only one
word for that play: meh.
“Less crying,” I told him, wanting one of them to give me reason to
be worried.
“Go to hell, Gus,” he spat, and I shrugged, throwing the puck back
to my team.
I was ten years old when someone first rhymed Miller with
Netminder. I was used to other players being frustrated with the fact that I
wasn’t letting them score. It didn’t matter if it was just practice or not.
My job was to defend, and I never stopped.
“It’s over,” Paul said after blowing the whistle. “Shower, boys, at
this rate we’re going to keep the lineup throughout all the games. I don’t see
anyone on the bench trying to stand out.”
They were trying hard, but the point was that the Lynx team was a
perfect machine. We knew how to read each other’s plays and maintain
possession of the game.
This was a miracle as much as a curse.
Connor had been out for three months because of the incident
involving Finnick Colleman’s skates and hand, and having someone in his
position would be nearly impossible.
“Man, this sucks.” Kill skated closer to me when I finally ripped
off the helmet. “Not that I want the reserves to beat us up, but if they tried,
at least it would be better. The coach will make our lives hell, he won’t rest
until one of us dies. Maybe this will pay off the debt we owe to the Denver
team.”
