SIERRA
Two Years Ago
All night, I’ve been hanging out with a group of girlfriends here at the
corner pub called Blarney’s. It’s a local place, pretty close to my apartment,
and always fun with a good crowd.
Tonight’s crowd, in particular, has captured my attention. Or, should I say,
one man specifically.
My gaze moves across the room and zeroes in on the guy sitting at the large
corner table, surrounded by friends. They’re loud, vibrant and the energy
flowing from that corner of the bar/restaurant is attracting my attention. If I
had to guess, they’re military and on leave right now, enjoying a night out in
the town.
My older brother Sawyer is a Navy SEAL, so I know a military man when I
see one. They exude a certain confidence that I’ve always found appealing.
Then there are usually the muscles, too. Lots of rippling muscles beneath
their uniform from all of their constant training. The guys at the corner table
are wearing t-shirts that are straining across their chests with flags, guns and
patriotic sayings which are clear indicators that they’re more than just your
average civilian.
There are seven men and a few women sitting at the table, but my eyes keep
being drawn back to the Tall, Dark and Handsome who’s eating a plate of
cupcakes and drinking a Guiness. A part of me wishes I was the frosting he’s
licking right now.
Giving myself a mental shake, I drag my attention away and try to refocus on
what my girlfriends are saying. Something about taking a vacation or maybe
shopping. I’m not sure.
My gaze slides back over to Sergeant Cupcake.
God, the way he’s eating that little, frosted dessert has me squeezing my
thighs together under the table and wondering just how good he is with that
tongue. Now I’m just outright staring, but I can’t help it.
“Sierra!” Becky says, elbowing me.
“Hmm?” I think I might actually be drooling and when I realize he’s looking
right back at me, I’m startled. A smirk lifts the edge of his lip, and then he
pops the rest of the cupcake in his mouth, chewing closely. Almost…
seductively.
My pulse thunders and I drag my gaze away and look over at Becky.
“You’ve been eye-fucking that guy all night. Why don’t you go over and say
hi?”
“No, I haven’t,” I instantly retort, beyond horrified. Have I? Oh, God, how
embarrassing.
“Yeah, and he’s clearly taken notice.”
I run a hand through my long, brown hair and frown. Pursuing a man is not
something I’ve ever done and despite wanting to talk to him, I’m not sure
how to actually do it. As the daughter of Thomas Beckett, billionaire
entrepreneur and coldest father alive, I’ve always had men pursue me.
And probably not for the right reasons. They’re always businessmen who
want to get in good with dear ol’ Daddy. I’m not stupid and know they have
an ulterior motive. But I guess in the back of my mind, I’m always hoping
they actually want me and not just a corner office at Beckett Technology.
It sucks being used and the only two relationships I’ve had in my 26 years
were men who wanted to work at my dad’s company. I don’t want to think
about my absentee father or his stupid company right now, though. All I want
to do is go meet that attractive man who I can’t stop admiring.
