Prologue
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in
truth.”
—1 John 3:18 NIV
Abigail
WHAT IS YOUR TRUE self?
Is it the smile you plaster on in front of those you love, to keep them from
worrying?
Is it the accomplishments you struggle for in order to be praised and
accepted?
Is it the violent, anxious storms that come and go without warning, that
you have no control of—the ones that ravage your soul and leave you aching
and vulnerable?
Is it the collection of marks others have left on you, ranging from scars or
bruises or something far worse, and far more invisible?
I had hidden my true self so long and so well that I could answer none of
these questions.
I became nothing more than a vessel, a mould for others to pour their
hopes and dreams into so that they might be pleased by me, that my
appearance or wit or actions might be enough to cover up, to block out the
gaping deficiencies in my life and in my heart.
Until he came along.
Him, who saw past all my masks and parlour tricks, through all my smiles
and into the tears that they covered.
Him, who saw all the broken parts of me without my letting him in.
Not because he wanted to hurt me using those jagged edges, or to slice
me with my own vulnerabilities.
But because he wanted to truly understand and care for me.
It seemed so impossible to me—the idea of a love that could not be
earned or bought but simply one to be enjoyed and reciprocated.
So very impossible that I knew it had to come from God.

HOW DO YOU SEPARATE your identity from that of your family?
What happens when everyone you love, suddenly decide that they simply
don’t love you back?
How do you reconcile your past with your present, your future with your
childhood?
For so much of my life, it had been simple. I would be one of Asia’s most
eligible bachelors, I would be everything expected of me by my family.
And it wasn’t such a terrible life to live, better than the ways that the
ninety-nine percent of people on this planet lived: my life was luxury jets and
polo matches, exotic locales and leisure. I had nothing to complain about, no
reason to worry.
