WYATT
It was never Wyatt’s dream job to be a bartender. He’d never planned to do
this for long.
But he hadn’t planned on a lot of things.
Like his ex-girlfriend convincing him to move to a small town in a
different state only to dump him and disappear into the night.
He was still here six years later. Yet, it was only recently that he really
started to accept that this was his home. The people he had in his life now
were his friends. His coworkers were his new family.
Most of the time, his social anxiety and general dislike of chaos made
the job he didn’t even want more difficult.
Then, there were days like today.
Almost the entire staff was here, and they were preparing for the
evening while also goofing off. They laughed and chatted around The
Tavern—cleaning, restocking, and taking care of business. It was early
afternoon, so no one else had come in yet. They had the entire bar to
themselves at the moment. And despite Becca’s arguments, Wyatt took
control of the music, which blared over the speakers, putting him in a good
mood.
Or at least, as good of a mood as he could be in while waiting for their
new manager to arrive.
“Behind you,” Owen said just as Becca shouted at Shawn over the loud
music. The latter laughed and tossed a balled-up napkin at her.
Wyatt couldn’t help but chuckle too. He might not have planned on
working here for long, but he didn’t hate his job. In these moments, he
actually enjoyed being here. His coworkers were all great. He had no idea
how he got so lucky on that front. Even Ryan, who rarely showed up on
time and called out more often than not, got along with everyone. They
were truly like a family.
And having a new person come in to join them made him nervous.
For weeks now, Jack—their boss and the owner of the bar—had been
absent. He’d managed the place for the last two decades mostly on his own
and said he needed a break. Except, Jack wasn’t coming in at all anymore,
and it was starting to worry Wyatt.
In recent years, Wyatt had stepped up to help as much as he could. He
owed the man everything for getting him through such a hard time in his
life. So, he had no problem running things in Jack’s absence. He hadn’t
expected Jack to call in his daughter to run things instead.
Not wanting to dwell on it too much and start spiraling, Wyatt grabbed a
few pieces of ice and crept around the bar toward Owen, who had his back
to him. Becca noticed his approach but didn’t call attention to it, instead
playfully lunging at Shawn. Her on-again boyfriend caught her by the waist
and twirled her around. As she squealed in delight, Wyatt made his move.
He tugged at the neck of Owen’s shirt and dropped the ice inside.
