Enara took a sip of her wine as the council continued to bicker back and
forth. Her head was pulsing from the ignorance tossed around the room like
children playing with balls.
“If the farmers do not have enough room to grow their crops, Auratus is
useless!” Duke Floric exclaimed, one of the new advisors to the Regent
Council. They were learned but blunt. Enara enjoyed him for the sole
purpose of his argumentative disposition.
“We cannot give up any more land to the farmers without running into
the Exalted Forest! The elves will skin us alive if we try to take their land,”
Sir Alran retorted. The once very poised man had become half the man he
was in the ten years since the battle. The lines on his face grew more
prominent, as did the dark blemishes. It still pained her to see his grayed
hair and shaking hands. Was it so long ago that she would beg him for a
piggyback ride?
“Those elves do nothing for us! I say we take it from them and deal with
the consequences later—”
Enara put up a hand, and the table quieted. She placed her wineglass on
the table.
“There is no need to make an enemy of the elves. Instead, we can send
a messenger to WhiteDrove to discuss more trading options with their
livestock and land claims. We can build several farms on the plains with a
mutual tax agreement if they allow it,” she said calmly. “For the meantime,
look for flatter land north of the Hills that can be used as farmland, I am
sure we can find land suitable enough for logging.”
Sir Alran nodded and gave a side-eye towards the duke. “Excellent
choice, Your Grace. I will send a scout after the coronation tomorrow
evening,” he said.
“If I may ask,” Duke Floric interrupted, shifting his coat. “Where is the
princess? Rosellena should be here when the elven emissary arrives as well,
should she not?”
Enara scoffed and took another drink of her wine, glancing out the
window. “My dear sister has decided she has more urgent matters to attend.
As per usual, you may speak to me about any urgencies that arise in the
kingdom.”
Rose had been to as many council meetings as Enara had toes. The girl
barely knew the names of her advisors, let alone how to rule the people. Her
mother was playing a dangerous game with her.
“Of course, Your Grace.”
Once her advisors had left the room, Enara stood up and walked over to
the window, swirling the red liquid in her hand. She watched the city
around her bustle with life. She could see the maids hanging laundry in the
yard, guards trailing along the walls and the hints of the garden where her
sister sat with her frivolous texts.
Suddenly, Enara felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end as the
window frosted in front of her. She watched a sheet of ice climb towards
her face as her breath became chilled. She heard his voice in the air around
her, nagging her, laughing at her. Enara gripped her glass and felt her hand
