THE BEGINNING…
The teenage boy was gasping and almost out of breath. He was running
as fast as his legs could carry him. The people behind… they were
gaining on him. This was the final push. Aiden wanted to look behind,
but he didn’t want to see how close they were. The wails of the surrounding
people filled the air, everywhere he looked he could see people shouting
and screaming; he could not tell if they were cheering or just screaming for
the sake of it. Aiden could hear the pounding footsteps approaching. He
was almost there, almost to safety. The sweat that curled his dark hair
attempted to blur his vision, but his eyebrows protected his eyes. A voice
echoed in the back of his head, Never give up, keep going. Aiden knew the
voice; it belonged to his father. Turning the final corner, the words of his
father still in his head, Aiden saw it – the finish line.
Only another hundred metres to go and he would be victorious in the 400-
metre race.
The patriotic American accents continued to scream and shout as the race
entered its final leg. Aiden was in the lead, members of the opposition
trailing behind him, but Aiden was not going to let them catch him. He
rotated his head to see where his dad said he would be, but as he looked,
Aiden realised his father wasn’t there. Aiden felt his heart tighten. Was his
father actually here? He said he would be when he’d dropped Aiden off
earlier. Beginning to doubt whether or not he could win this race, Aiden
scanned through the crowd in a last attempt to locate his father, but he was
nowhere to be seen.
Aiden was almost there, only a few metres away. His feet were burning
within his shoes, the friction between sole and track felt as if his feet were
being boiled, but the red ribbon lay ahead of him.
Anticipating breaking through the ribbon, Aiden realised that wasn’t
going to happen. In the corner of his eye, he watched his rival storm past
him, claiming victory in the race and tearing apart the ruby-coloured ribbon.
Aiden felt his heart drop to the bottom of his stomach. He looked towards
his teammates and coach on the side lines and the shock on their faces.
He’d been so certain he could win for them.
Crossing the finish line, watching the opposition’s team throw the winner
up in the air, Aiden saw what could have been his. Struggling to remain
standing, Aiden collapsed to the ground, cradling his head in between his
legs, embarrassed by his loss and wanting to be left alone.
The minutes turned into hours as families and teams left the club, leaving
Aiden alone with his teammates outside the club talking.
