EVIE
He looked good in that suit. Really good. Evie watched as her boss
said goodbye to a couple of their coworkers, all smiled and pats
on the back. The Christmas party had been fun enough, she supposed, but
her main goal for the evening hadn’t been achieved yet.
And Evie always achieved her goals.
She hung back as more and more people started to leave, wishing
everyone a good rest of the night. As the office slowly emptied, Evie busied
herself clearing away plastic cups with bad red wine inside, waiting for her
moment. Soon enough, it was just her and her boss left, cleaning the
evening away.
”You don’t have to do that,” he said, his voice deep and rumbling. ”I’ve
got this, Evie.”
She looked up at him, smiling sweetly. ”I don’t mind. Don’t you want
some company?”
He shoved a gingerbread garland into a plastic bag, his smile curving
around his tusks. ”I don’t know if I should be honored or worried that you
choose to clean the office with your boss rather than go home for the night.”
She huffed out a laugh. ”Honored. Definitely honored.”
”If you say so.” He paused and looked at her, and Evie didn’t miss the
way his dark eyes lingered on her. Maybe it was wishful thinking. She
didn’t think so, though.
Evie had lusted after Nash ever since she first stepped into the office
almost a year ago. At first, it had just been physical, but she soon realized
that Nash ticked every one of her boxes. Kind, funny, thoughtful, ambitious.
Not to mention sexy as hell. She’d never been with an orc before, but that
didn’t matter. Interspecies relationships were getting so common that no
one would bat an eye at seeing them together. Not that she cared if they did.
The fact that he was her boss might pose a problem, however, but not
enough to deter her. She’d scoured the employee handbook front to back
enough times that she could probably recite it from memory, and there were
no rules against them getting together. But she was getting ahead of herself.
Nothing had actually happened yet. Sure, a few flirty exchanges here and
there, mostly from her side, but tonight, Evie was taking charge.
Hopefully, she still had a job tomorrow.
“So,” she said after a moment’s silence. “Are you celebrating Christmas
with your family this year?”
Nash shook his head and got back to picking up empty cups and plates.
“No, unfortunately not. They live quite far away, and it just didn’t work out.
Hopefully next year, though. How about you?”
Evie shook her head. “No family to speak of. It’s just me, some takeout
and bad Christmas movies. It’s my own little tradition.”
Nash regarded her. “You always celebrate on your own?”
“Hey, don’t make it sound so sad,” she said with a laugh. “I like my
own company.”
