THE SPILL
“Are you sure?” Falling back onto the bare mattress, I stare up at the
ceiling. “I mean, I don’t want to intrude on you and Matt’s privacy.”
Isla drops down next to me. “Are you kidding me? We’ve had years here
together. You won’t be bothering us. Plus, it’s going to be fun having my
best friend in the room next to me.”
“Thanks for letting me stay.”
“That’s what friends are for Palmer. To help you when you need it the
most.”
Sitting up from the bed, I pat her on the knee. “I appreciate it.
Hopefully, I won’t be here long.”
“You can stay as long as you need to.” She stands from the bed and
checks her watch. “Umm… don’t you need to be at work soon?”
“Shit,” I yelp jumping from the bed. I begin opening boxes that are
stacked around the bedroom. “I’ve got to change quick.”
She opens a couple of boxes before finding the one containing my
clothes and hands me something from the top. I grab the black fitted shirt
and jeans from her while I start stripping out of the dirty clothes I’m
wearing. “Thanks.”
Watching her as she walks out of the room, I take a deep breath. Moving
in with my best friend wasn’t where I thought I’d end up, but it was my
only option. Money was getting tight now that I’d graduated from college
and was paying off student loans. My parents live at least an hour away
from the city. Not only would that daily drive be miserable, but what
woman in her mid-twenties wants to move back in with her parents? Not
this one. So here I am, a broke barista who’s living with her best friend and
trying to pursue her dreams of being an architect.
After changing, I quickly tie up my long, dark, auburn hair into a messy
bun on the top of my head before grabbing my bag and walking out of the
room. Isla and her long-time boyfriend Matt are making breakfast in the
kitchen as I go to leave. “I’ll see you guys later.”
“Have a great day!” Isla shouts just as I close the door.
I stroll down the five flights of stairs before walking out the glass front
doors and onto the city sidewalk. Opening my phone to see the time, I
realize that I’m going to be just a few minutes late. So I pick up the pace
and start to jog, bordering on a sprint.
The sign The Java House comes into view after a few minutes, and I
rush through the front door. There’s a line of people waiting already.
Penelope, the cashier, spots me immediately. “There you are.”
“Sorry.” I set my bag down under the counter and began working orders
off the ticket board. “I moved this morning, remember.”
“Yeah, yeah,” she laughs, “I know.”
“Did he say anything yet?” I nod in the direction of the back office.
Our manager, Tom, hangs out in the office, but he always knows when
I’m late because his eyes are glued to the security cameras all the hours of
the day. It’s toeing the line of stalker tendencies.
