Three weeks earlier
It’s New Year’s Eve, and I’m about to get proposed to.
My wonderful boyfriend of two years is due here at any minute to take
me out and propose with a grand romantic gesture that we’ll re-live and
gush over for the rest of our lives.
It’s 7 p.m., and I stand by the window watching the street for my fiancéto-be’s arrival. He said he’d pick me up. I don’t know what that means – if
he’s driving over, coming in a taxi, or maybe even rocking up in a stretch
limo.
It’s unusual for him to plan an evening out. He’s the spontaneous, ideas
type, and I tend to do all the planning and booking and logistics. He’ll say,
‘Rach, let’s go paddleboarding tomorrow!’ and then I’ll research where to
go, how long it will take in the car, what time we should leave, and a nice
place we could grab lunch. It’s just one of the ways we work so well
together.
So, when he said last week that he’d ‘sort New Year’s Eve’, I just knew
it was for something special. For our engagement.
I bought a sexier-than-I’d-normally-wear red dress for the occasion, dug
out my fancy matching underwear, got waxed, had my nails done, blow
dried my hair, and carefully applied my makeup. I want to look as good as
possible in all our ‘I said yes!’ photos. These past few days, I’ve even
moisturised my hands obsessively so my skin will glow in the inevitable
close-up pics of my new engagement ring glistening on my finger.
At five minutes past seven, I’m getting twitchy. He’s usually a few
minutes late, so it’s no biggie, but my nervous excitement is getting the
better of me. I dash to the loo for a fast nervous wee – it’ll be just my luck
that he arrives at the exact moment my sexy pants are around my ankles.
He doesn’t though, so I head back to the window and bounce from one
foot to the other. As I watch the street, my mind wanders.
We’ll have a short
engagement. A wonderful summer wedding. A happy marriage. Two kids
minimum. A large family home with dog, cat, fish, and tortoise.
I have a thing for tortoises because of my father’s old pet, Mick Jagger.
He’d plod around the house when I was a child. After the accident, Mick
was the only thing I liked about my court-ordered visits to see my father
and sisters.
I’ve worked hard to put all that behind me, and my life now is perfect –
a new dream job, a lovely flat, a new vibrant city to make my mark on. And
with this engagement, it’s about to get even better.
At eleven minutes past, my phone rings. It’s Brandon, of course. Perhaps
this is all part of his plan to keep me on my toes. Perhaps the limo driver
got lost or the taxi was a no-show, and now he’s running much later than
usual.
I pick up the phone. But, like opening a shaken-up bottle of fizzy pop,
my excitement bubbles up and explodes. With zero chill, I answer and
squeal, “Hey, babe!”
“Hello.” His voice is flat. Sombre, even.
