A fternoon sunlight travels across the face of the young woman sitting at
the breakfast bar. My nanny candidate, Holly Goodwin, is a smiley twentysomething with her hands clasped tightly together. She squints slightly
against the bright light. The flash of yellow brings out the amber hues of her
light-brown hair worn impeccably straight to her shoulders.
She sits primly. Her smile is small and knowing.
Wearing a simple navy hair band and pearl stud earrings, she reminds
me of uptight soccer moms who bring extra orange slices to the games.
Holly straightens her shoulders, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
“Oh, I don’t mind a fussy baby,” she says. Her voice is soft and honey
sweet. “My last family hired me after they had trouble with their newborn. I
stayed with them for two years in the end. It’s always hard to leave, but
they’d only planned to hire me for six months. Mrs. Watson still sends me
updates, along with little Sawyer’s crayon drawings.”
I lean in, giving her a quick, professional smile. I don’t want to seem
too keen, even though on the inside I’m silently thanking the universe for
bringing her to us. With help, I can return to my floral shop.
I can get out of
the house that has been stifling me. God knows I’m going stir-crazy here.
“Holly, I think it’s safe to say that you are smart, qualified, and have great
references. I love my shop, and I’m excited about returning, but it’s
bittersweet, you know? I want to put my family in the care of someone I
can trust.”
“That’s completely understandable,” she says. She bites her lip slightly
as though in anticipation.
“I’m certain that person is you.” I smile.
Holly’s pale-blue eyes grow wider and wider. Her cheeks flush
slightly. She shifts to the edge of her seat. “Really?”
Before I can answer, the door leading to the garage bursts open. Jace,
my twelve-year-old son, files in first, his baseball cleats clomping across
the tiles. Two sand-colored patches rest on the knees of his baseball
uniform.
“Jace, shoes, honey.” I point to them, standing.
Holly stands, too, a confident smile stretching her lips. She folds her
hands together, waiting for an introduction.
“Sorry, Mom.” Jace rolls his eyes and uses the toe of one cleat to
shove off the other shoe.
Behind him, my husband, Rick, steps into the house, our six-monthold baby planted on his right hip. He’s as handsome as always, and seeing
him with little Lissa makes my stomach tingle.
His eyes find mine first then Holly’s. He immediately puts out a free
hand. “Rick Miller.”
“Hi, I’m Holly. Holly Goodwin.” Her eyes briefly meet my husband’s
gaze before flicking down to her sensible shoes.
“Am I too late?” Rick asks, his eyes panning between us, his brows
knitting together. “Sorry, practice went on longer than normal.” He glances
at Jace, who stomps over to the fridge.
“It wasn’t my fault. I’m not the coach,” Jace says.
I give Holly an apologetic smile. “Sorry. This is what having a preteen
is like.”
Jace sulks behind the refrigerator door.
“That’s okay. What team are you on?” she asks, raising her voice so
Jace can hear her
