Persephone
“Welcome home, Your Majesty.”
The words echo in the room that was previously silent save
the fire crackling homily behind me. My ears ring, blood
pumping through my veins. Adrenaline courses through me, my chest
constricting as I struggle to take in sufficient oxygen. My head swims,
making the room spin.
Your Majesty?
I whip around to face the strange woman, her expression a mixture of awe
and bewilderment, a careful smile tugging at her lips.
“Your Majesty?”
Hekate nods. “Yes, Queen of the Underworld, Dark Spring, the Mistress
of the Obsidian Throne.”
My brows furrow, and I look down at the ground, trying to find some
understanding and make sense of what this woman is saying. Dark Spring?
I shake my head and look up at her. “No. You’ve got the wrong person.
I’m just… Persephone.”
Hekate lifts a brow. “If you’re so sure that you are the wrong person, why
is your outfit changing?”
I frown and look down, gasping as Hades’ shirt slowly transforms into a
floor-length black gown, the silk whispering against my skin as it hugs my
every curve perfectly, the thigh slit tracking almost to my hip. I slide my
hand over my waist, my fingers gliding over the soft material, watching it
shimmer under my touch.
I lift my head, as a weight settles atop it. I slowly raise my hand,
frowning as my fingers meet cool hard metal. On shaky legs, now supported
by feet in sky-high black heels, I walk to a large mirror on the wall. A dark
obsidian frame encased the window to my reflection. Small delicate roses and
intricately carved vines climb up the frame. The sharp thorns are so
pronounced it reminds me of myself.
A rose with a bite.
I step into the path of the mirror, blinking at the woman staring back at
me. My reflection is somewhat familiar to what I usually see, yet so foreign
at the same time. The crystal blue eyes looking back at me belong to me but
look clearer, brighter. My face looks paler, drawing attention to the rosy
blush high on my cheeks and the redness of my lips. My hair, the same
reddish brown, still fell in loose curls down my back. I tilt my head slightly,
my breath catching as the light catches on the heavy crown perched proudly
atop my head.
It is solid gold imbued with small diamonds and large rubies. The
stunning coronet sits perfectly, making me look every bit the queen Hekate
seems to think I am. The spikes point threateningly toward the ceiling, and
the entire piece holds an air of power.
Hekate silently moves to stand behind me, her hands clasped. “All Hail
the Queen.”
My eyes meet hers in the mirror, and I turn to face her, shaking my head.
“You’re crazy…”
“What I am is the Goddess of Witchcraft and ruler of Propylaia, the land
of lost souls.”
My eyebrows draw, and I decide to hold off on this conversation until
later when I can discuss everything with Hades. My eyes snap back to
Hekate. “Where is Hades?”
She lifts a shoulder in an unconcerned shrug. “It is not my job to know
where Hades is. My job was to find and escort my queen here when the curse
activated.”
I blink. “Curse?”
Hekate glances at one of the grand doors at the far end of the room,
clearly avoiding my question. She purses her lips and blows, emitting a sharp,
cutting whistle. A moment later, I hear something barreling down the
hallway. Is that the sound of… paws? The walls of the building seem to
