The Arianyte Empire Decree #5
For the safety of Earth’s people and extraterrestrial travelers, the Solar System Policing of Arianyte
Retrievals, Rewards, Operations, and Warrants—a.k.a. SSPARROW—will be given full authority to
police and regulate the people of Earth and the solar system in which it resides (the Aurora System)
under Arianyte law and the Devouring Accords.
SIX YEAR LATER
They still consider grand theft auto a crime under Arianyte law, and it’s
much more enforced within the major metropolises like Zarmenia City,
but does that stop me?
Never.
Because the last thing I care about are the laws of this corrupt empire.
“Don’t forget to pull the registration out so the owner doesn’t get their
head chopped off if this van somehow gets into the occupation’s hands. I
don’t want an innocent person going down for what we’re doing tonight.” I
rummage through the back of this handyman’s hover-van, stolen only
moments ago by the three of us. I tiptoe around loose tools and worker’s
supplies as the hover zooms around another street block into the heart of the
city. “Maybe take it easy on the corners, will you?”
All I can see of Dimitri is his bald head poking over the driver’s seat
headrest. “You can think of every little detail you want, but your little
revenge plot is still going to be doomed.”
I flip an old paint bucket upside down to sit on and lock eyes with
Dimitri in the rearview mirror. His best friend, Connar, is sitting idly in the
passenger seat, prone to his own skepticism about what’s going to happen
tonight. Lights from the city make their way into the back of the van like
peeping eyes, likely judging me too.
“One, the boss wants you here—so you’re here,” I say, trying my best
to sound like I know what I’m doing. “Two, we know what these sky-rats
are up to during this meeting. We know Arianyte wants to negotiate terms
of the Devouring Accords, which can only be bad news for all of us. Yes,
it’s a risky plan, but the rewards for succeeding can be substantial.”
The reward for me will be substantial.
The two guys are silent, and that awful gut feeling I get when I know
nobody believes in me bubbles up. I question everything about my plan for
tonight, but I can’t let that deter me now. Not when I’m on the verge of
getting everything I want—of getting everything I need.
Both men are several years older than me, somewhere in their
midtwenties, and they’ve always looked at me like being seventeen is far
too young to be pioneering this type of mission. All the humans—or
Terrans—in the Terran Resistance see me differently, and it’s for the same
reason the aliens of Arianyte continue to hunt me down.
Arianyte came for Gavrielle; sooner or later they’ll come for me too.
Everything hinges on this moment for me because it could mean the end.
The end of running in fear. To looking over my shoulder every single day,
wondering if Arianyte will capture me.
