THE STEADY HUM OF THE COFFEE MACHINE SOFTENS THE
SOUND OF THE RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC OUTSIDE, JUST AUDIBLE
THROUGH THE OPEN WINDOW. Such a contrast between the two. I lean
idly against the counter, the rich smell of the brewing coffee already starting to
awaken my drowsy senses.
Four hours of sleep…
I yawn, glancing out of the window, grateful once again for my sixteenth-story
apartment, allowing incredible views of the city and providing undisturbed access
to the most incredible sunrises.
This morning, the sun looks as lethargic as I feel, her shine muted as she
reluctantly rises.
Mood.
I tilt my head, watching her lazy ascent, my mind drifting to the sunrises of my
past. How different my life is now…
I walk to the window, gazing out at the concrete jungle, and I can’t help the
comparisons to my home charging to the forefront of my mind. Buildings litter
my view, stretching high to the sky. Cars and trucks crawl down the busy streets.
Humans bob and weave as they hurry along the sidewalks, in the midst of their
daily rat race. So unlike the view from my lonely balcony on Olympus, vibrant,
grass-covered, rolling hills as far as the eye can see. Birdsong filling the air, trying,
but failing, to drown out the sound of my thoughts. A serenity afforded to so few,
wasted on me, the female who desires…something else.
This isn’t exactly what I imagined when I fantasized about this realm. They
say the grass is always greener, a concept I could never wrap my head around from
my ivory tower, but the reality is, nothing is ever perfect.
How easily I could slip back into my old routine at home. My mother loves a
strict schedule. From before I can remember, my every move was timetabled,
leaving no room for even an errant thought.
I sigh, glancing at my laptop. It’s not as if I don’t have any ties here. While I
don’t have the endless menial chores, I do have ajob. I groan inwardly, thinking of
the emails that await me, even though I only stopped working four and a half
hours ago. While I don’t have my mother here, I do have clients, clients who are
somehow even needier than her. Then, there is the other human stuff I have to
deal with: bills, taxes, rent, mansplaining.
My mother warned me. I was so wrapped up in the romance of it all that I
disregarded her, and there was no way I was going to let her win by stalking back
to her, hat in hands.
Don’t be a fool, P. She always wins.
I scoff, shaking my head. It’s not as if I hadn’t paid the price to come here. For
228 years, I begged and pleaded. Trying to convince her that it would be
beneficial, not just to me, but to her, as well.
