TWENTY-NINE YEARS LATERĀ
Marasi had never been in a sewer before, but it was exactly as awful as sheā€™d
imagined. The stench was incredible, of course. But worse was the way her
booted feet would occasionally slip for a heart-stopping moment, threatening
to plunge her down into the ā€œmudā€ underneath.

At least sheā€™d had the foresight to wear a uniform with trousers today,
along with knee-high leather work boots. But there was no protection from
the scent, the feel, orā€”unfortunatelyā€”the sound of it. When she took a step
ā€”map in one hand, rifle in the otherā€”each boot would pull free with a
squelch of mythical proportions. It would have been the worst sound ever, if
not overmatched by Wayneā€™s complaining.

ā€œWax never brought me into a rusting sewer,ā€ he muttered, raising the
lantern.
ā€œAre there sewers in the Roughs?ā€
ā€œWell, no,ā€ he admitted. ā€œPastures smell almost as bad, and he did make
me march through those. But Marasi, they didnā€™t have spiders.ā€
ā€œThey probably did,ā€ she said, angling the map toward his lantern. ā€œYou
just couldnā€™t see them.ā€

ā€œSuppose,ā€ he grumbled. ā€œBut itā€™s worse when you can see the webs.
Also thereā€™s, you know, the literal sewage.ā€
Marasi nodded to a side tunnel and they started in that direction. ā€œDo you
want to talk about it?ā€
ā€œWhat?ā€ he demanded.
ā€œYour mood.ā€

ā€œNothingā€™s wrong with my rusting mood,ā€ he said. ā€œItā€™s precisely the
mood youā€™re supposed to have when your partner forces you to stick your
frontside into a buncha stuff that comes out of your backside.ā€
ā€œAnd last week?ā€ she asked. ā€œWhen we were investigating a perfume
shop?ā€

ā€œRusting perfumers,ā€ Wayne said, his eyes narrowing. ā€œNever can tell
what theyā€™re hiding with those fancy smells. You canā€™t trust a man what
doesnā€™t smell like a man should.ā€
ā€œSweat and booze?ā€

ā€œSweat and cheap booze.ā€
ā€œWayne, how can you complain about someone putting on airs? You put
on a different personality every time you change hats.ā€
ā€œDoes my smell change?ā€
ā€œI suppose not.ā€
ā€œArgument won. There are literally no holes in it whatsoever.
Conversation over.ā€

They shared a look.
ā€œI should get me some perfumes, eh?ā€ Wayne said. ā€œSomeone might spot
my disguises if I always smell like sweat and cheap booze.ā€
ā€œYouā€™re hopeless.ā€
ā€œWhatā€™s hopeless,ā€ he said, ā€œis my poor shoes.ā€
ā€œCould have worn boots like I suggested.ā€
ā€œAinā€™t got no boots,ā€ he said. ā€œWax stole them.ā€
ā€œWax stole your boots. Really.ā€
