This vacation was supposed to be my honeymoon—the start of a
beautiful marriage. Now, it’s just a consolation prize for being the most
pathetic loser.
I sit back in the rowboat, gazing out on the most beautiful sunset. The last
vestiges of sunlight are a bright orange that casts the Highlands in shadow
and color the clouds a soft shade of mauve.
The Loch Ness reflects the sky like a giant mirror, making it look like I’m
floating in flames. Colin would have enjoyed this view if he hadn’t jilted me
the morning of our wedding.
Getting ghosted by him was painful enough. Having to explain everything
to a church full of our friends and family was humiliating. Since Dad had
paid for everything, I decided not to mope and turned the day into a ‘Lexi
dodged a bullet’ party.
I’m more angry than hurt. Colin could have told me months ago that he
was having second thoughts, but he wasted everyone’s time, money, and
expectations. I keep telling myself that getting dumped was for the best.
Things could be worse: I could be pregnant by that asshole.
Something drops in the water, followed by a loud splash that has my gaze
jerking to the side. A foot-long trout rises from the surface, its scales
reflecting every color of the rainbow.
“Shit,” I say with a laugh. “For a moment, I thought that was the Loch
Ness monster.”
More trout join the first one, and soon, there’s an entire school. I pull out
my phone and shoot some footage, hoping to capture the fish in the light. One
of them rises to the surface, looking like it’s about to swallow a floating piece
of plastic. Setting down my phone, I fish it out of the water and away from
the trout’s reach.
This moment of excitement almost makes up for what happened after I
got jilted.
My friend, Denise, asked what I planned to do about the honeymoon and
offered to come with me. She said it would show Colin that I was living my
best life without him, and I agreed.
On the first night we went to a bar overlooking the loch, Denise got
drunk, met a hot university student, and asked if she could use our room. I
said no, so she stormed out, leaving me alone. I didn’t hear from her until
lunchtime the next day when she sent a text demanding to know where I’d
disappeared.
