The ambient hum of the road lulled her. Jennifer couldn’t remember
the last time she’d gotten more than four or five hours of sleep. Her life was
an appointment book riddled with tabs and when her head did hit her
pillow, it was often too full to fall asleep—the next day’s tasks, the coming
week’s concerns, the whims and woes of running a successful company
while being one of its star attractions. So, Jennifer spent her days exhausted
and her nights pretending not to be.
The town car’s tinted windows prevented her from seeing out, so the
city sped around her in darkness. There was nothing to distract her, nothing
but the endless black of the empty leather seat beside her and the glossy
dark of the glass partition separating her from her driver and security detail
—a charming hammer of a woman named Carolina Roberson. Jennifer
closed her eyes. She was alone, and for the variable length of this car ride,
she had no cause to pretend. She would rest.
A familiar chime snapped her awake again. Now, the road was silent.
The vibration of movement beneath her feet was gone.
Jennifer shot up and grabbed a compact mirror from the small black
clutch at her side, flicked it open and circled her face, checking all her
angles. She passed a hand over her hair, the inky black pristine braid that
fell to the dip of her back. Her scarlet lips were striking against her fair
skin, as was the fresh jasmine bloom pinned to the breast of her slim-fit,
raven suit. She caught her own gaze in the mirror, sharp azure under
charcoal, and winked at herself—a little ritual she’d long indulged in.
Go get ’em, Gorgeous.
The car door opened as she dropped her mirror back into her clutch,
and Carolina stood in the opening, a brick house in a classic-fit, mocha suit.
Jennifer took her offered hand and, as she stepped out of the car, her heels
crunched and wobbled over dirt and gravel. She steadied her step with
Carolina’s help and got her first look at their destination.
Port Orford Cedars and Oregon Ash trees speckled the visible land
around them, lit by fairy lights strung among the branches. Their towering
bodies morphed into shadowy giants as they disappeared into the dark of
the acreage beyond. Fresh, wild, and warm summer air, heavy with florals,
filled Jennifer’s nose as she took in the looming house ahead:
an old, triplestory Eastlake Victorian, peeling white with faded purple trim and a
wraparound, roofed porch surrounded by bushy lavender. Crickets chirped
in a continuous symphony from within the stalks, the sound just as
mesmerizing as the hum of the long drive had been, and Jennifer felt a dull
ache for home.
