The girl was just fourteen, but she had already killed.
She could even still taste the blood on her lips. Dried now,
crusting on her skin, but still fresh enough that she could feel the
spray if she closed her eyes tight.
She steadied her breathing, seeing nothing through the hood they had
over her head. All she knew was that she was in the back of a vehicle. A
van, she thought, considering the cold floor under her bare hamstrings. The
cotton dress they’d put her in was freshly washed and itchy, stiff and barely
clean from the sweat and blood washed out of it
Where they were taking her, she didn’t know. She didn’t know anything
except that the men with her were going to kill her, or worse. And then, a
thought seized her. How hard would she have to slam her head into the steel
between her naked feet to end it all right now? Did she have the strength?
The time?
Her hands were bound behind her back, and she was weak. So weak.
But she knew she had to act soon, do something, or her fate would be
sealed. Another girl, disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.
‘Water,’ she croaked.
The man behind her – she could smell his cheap aftershave,
overpowering and pungent, the kind that lays on your senses like a wet,
putrid blanket – grunted a little. ‘Hungh?’
‘Water, please,’ the girl said again, voice strained and hoarse.
The man laughed a little. Amused.
The girl sagged, lolling forward and then to the side.
She felt a heavy hand on the back of her neck, pulling her back into a
sitting position.
But she was limp now, falling whichever way the bouncing of the van
pushed her.
She coughed, muted at first, and then harder, more violently. A hacking,
wheezing, throat stinging cough.
The man swore, grabbing the hood and roughly tearing it from her
scalp, taking hair with it.
She pushed through the pain, coughing still, eyes swivelling in her head
as she fell sideways once more.
The guy, fat and hairy, panted as he got to one knee, holding her upright
by the side of her face while he fumbled the cap from a bottle of water.
His thumb pinched her ear, his pudgy, clammy fingers sinking into the
flesh around her jaw and throat.
She felt the hard rim of a water bottle pressed to her lips and drank
greedily, slurping it down.
The guy told her to go slowly, she’d have to piss herself otherwise. But
the water didn’t matter. It was something else she wanted.
A quick twist of the head pulled her cracked lips from the bottle and one
of those clammy fingers slid into her mouth.
Before he knew what was happening, she bit down, hard, her teeth
grazing the cool, smooth metal of a ring as she did.
