“I KINDA LIKE it,” I lied, pushing the burnt ends of Shael’s blood-red
hair away from his face.
We walked along the street, our boots splashing in the shallow
puddles on the sidewalk. The vibrant neon signs of the district square
reflected off the wet pavement, lighting the area with radiant color.
“My own element.” Shael wiped his forehead, smudging the line of
soot at his hairline. “Used against me.”

Even this late at night, the Silver District was alive with activity.
In the weeks since Valeria’s massacre at the Colosseum, ships
manned by undead crews had been raiding the outlying villages on Draqaar.
Those who could afford to hire portal keepers sought refuge on Earth. Most
of them ended up in Haven, and many needed the help of the Enchanter.
I’d been working cases at a blistering pace. Exhaustion weighed
down my limbs, but mana sang in my blood like adrenaline. I harnessed that
energy to keep me moving.

Shael and Felix had accompanied me to my last Enchanter case for
the day. It was just the three of us. Em took the night off to have a dinner
date with her girlfriends Alani and Inala, going on about something called a
“work-life balance.”

Fortunately, Shael made the perfect distraction while I dispelled a
fire-breathing curse on a little boy. Unfortunately, laughing made the boy
breathe fire.
It was just one of a string of curses I’d been called to dispel lately.
No one escaped the undead raids unscathed. Those they didn’t kill or
capture fled Draqaar cursed by elemental or daeva magic.

I skidded to a halt as a door swung out in front of me. A daeva
woman stumbled out of the bar, clutching a pitcher of beer and yelling at
someone inside. Felix wasn’t paying attention and crashed into my back,
sending me flying into the girl.

Her beer spilled on me before she fell catastrophically to the ground.
I cringed. That one looked like it hurt.
“Are you okay?” I offered her my hand and shot a glare at the guy
who followed her outside. He didn’t make a move to help. He was too busy
staring at the girl’s butt where her tight skirt rode up.
I hauled her to her feet. Her hazy eyes swam for a moment before
they focused on me. She took in my hooded leather jacket, mask, and
finally, the two silent shadows over my shoulders.

“Oh gods. I’m so sorry, Enchanter!” she gushed, wiping at my shirt.
Her recognition made my skin itch. Ever since the Colosseum in
Qaanir, daeva had been treating me like some kind of hero. It freaked me
out. I’d been striving for anonymity ever since escaping the compound six
years ago.
I seriously considered ditching the disguise. It’d become more
recognizable than my actual face. But old habits died hard.
