The last few weeks felt like fucking years.
That was the first thing that came to mind for Detective
Inspector Olivia Austin. It was one of those months where the
entire world drew to a standstill so that they could experience the misery in
slow motion.

Dean repeatedly told her he was okay, but of course he would.
Everything about him oozed calmness. It was one of the things she adored
about him.

She didn’t really know what the alternative was. It wasn’t as though she
wanted him to be unhappy. No. She loved him just as he was. It was just
that she didn’t know how anyone could be in such good spirits after
everything he’d been through.

He’d been framed for laddering and conspiracy to commit murder,
facing life in prison for Gabi’s death, and to add insult to injury, Newquay
CID had expected him to waltz back into work and be grateful that he
hadn’t been nicked for something he hadn’t even done.
It was a fucking joke.

But the most frustrating thing was that even though he’d been found
innocent of all accusations, that hadn’t prevented many of his colleagues
from looking at him disdainfully, as though he’d gotten away with murder.
In their department, it wasn’t innocent until proven guilty or even guilty
until proven innocent. It was guilty despite being proven innocent.

The biggest blow, though, regarded Gabi. Her body was being flown out
of the UK to her funeral in Italy, and to the surprise of no one, Dean was
forbidden from attending. As far as her family were concerned, she’d died
because of her connection to him. The moment he’d entered her life and the
moment he’d started dating her, she was dead. And he couldn’t bring
himself to argue that point.

But Liv could see how much it hurt him. Regardless of how she felt
about it, the two shared a history, and things needed to be laid to rest.
The hardest conversation came after Gabi’s body made its final return to
Italy and Liv was sat on Dean’s sofa with Briggs hovering beside her to be
fussed. They sat in silence for most of the evening, any attempts by her to
make conversation shot down with two-syllable answers. In the end, she
was satisfied that just being with him was enough. He knew she was there.

“Liv…” Dean let out a long, heavy deep breath as she turned to him.
“Do you think I’m cursed?” The question came completely out of nowhere
and took her by surprise. She was so surprised that some of the wine in her
glass sloshed over the rim and landed on the dog.
“Why would you think that?” she fired back, trying to work out where
the conversation was heading.

He avoided making eye contact with her, choosing to keep his eyes on
the TV remote instead.

“Dean?” she urged.
Finally, he looked up at her.
“I don’t know. Perhaps because everyone who dares to get close to me,
one way or another, ends up worse off. My mum, dad, Gabi… you,” he
