A Small Mountain Town
Thalia
“Damn it!” Thalia coughed through clouds of smoke, reaching for a
small fire extinguisher. It wasn’t a large blaze, but there were enough
flammable materials on her lab bench to warrant the spray. Once the fire
was doused, she scribbled the disappointing results into a spiral notebook.
At the very top of the page were the words Persuasion Potion Trials. “Test
fifty-four, failure. Exploded. Hedgeguin quills created a high frequency
electric current when compounded with base solution, likely because of the
Abaia water.” She threw her pencil down and leaned back in her desk chair,
groaning her frustration at the ceiling.

There were two types of people in Pandora: those who would never
leave and those who wanted nothing more than to get the hell out. Thalia
Lambros was the latter. She already had everything planned. Once she
finished her senior year at Pandora High, she would take her car and drive
straight towards Telluride until she was out of Colorado entirely. From
there, she’d end up wherever she damn well pleased. It didn’t matter, as
long as she wasn’t in Pandora.

The problem with Pandora wasn’t palpable; it was a newly
renovated resort town with tourists flocking to their so-called “quaint”
shops, luscious hiking trails, and scenic gondola rides. With its renowned
waterfall and massive reservoir for boating, water skiing, and other
ridiculous water sports that Thalia had a hard time believing people actually
enjoyed, Pandora was on its way to becoming the next hot getaway spot in
Colorado. That was not the problem. The problem was that she wasn’t
allowed to leave. No matter how hard she tried, it was never possible, even
for a weekend. Once, when she was in elementary school, there had been a
school trip to a festival in Telluride— only a thirty-minute drive out of town
— but her older sister, Melpomene, had refused to sign the permission slip.
When Thalia had tried to forge the signature, her other older sister,
Calliope, had tattled on her.

No, Thalia had never been able to get out of Pandora. No matter
what, she had to stay there because of the family business. How she wished
it was something normal like running a little bookshop or perhaps a bakery
on the River Front like most of her classmates’ families did. The Lambros
Family Business was terrible, and it was all her great-great grandmother’s
fault.

Great-great grandma Toya Lambros and her husband, Nikos,
emigrated to the U.S. from Greece. They fled their home country after Toya
was accused of witchcraft. They brought crates of living creatures to be
cared for in the massive mansion Nikos had designed in the deepest,
thickest part of Pandora Wood. They named the mansion Lambros House: a
sanctuary for all wayward creatures and cryptids. It was here that the
family’s first magical creatures were raised, rehabilitated, and reintroduced
into the world to wreak havoc on humans.
