ELIA
Moon’s tits.
Four coppers for an orange? The goblin must have been
insane to charge those prices.
“Fine, fine,

” I begrudgingly agreed to the price gouging.
If my mother hadn’t insisted she needed oranges, I’d spin on
my heel and stomp away at the sheer audacity of the vendor.
Another peddler may have them next week. I would have
taken my chances, but when Mom needed something, we
couldn’t wait.

The female goblin—whose name I never caught despite
her being a seller at the traveling market for weeks—smiled
wickedly as I counted out the sixteen coins for four of the
delicious fruits. Her all-black eyes were fixed on the palm of
my hand, and when I handed over the money, she stuffed it
into the coin purse on her hip, emitting a sound akin to a
moan.

Goblins were known for their love of money and shiny
objects, making it no surprise that most vendors were of this
species. Her mate stood behind her stoically, watching the
marketplace for any signs of threats. Females were rare for
any faerie species, so his caution was understandable.
I gathered the oranges and deposited them into the basket
slung over my arm. I looked at the short, avaricious creature;
her purple skin seemed more luminescent after handling the
precious metal. She nodded her bald head, and the earrings
on her long, tapered ears jingled merrily with the movement.
Like all goblins, she didn’t have hair, but this vendor had
adorned her ears with more precious metals and jewels than
I’d ever seen before. I huffed out a breath, still fuming over
the prices as I turned toward the seed-seller a few meters
down the dusty aisle of the square.

The last items on my list were pumpkin seeds—another
request from my mom. As I approached the last stand in our
little market plaza, I heard someone calling my name.
“E-li-a!” the voice singsonged from behind me. “Elia, my
love, how could you abandon me? I was so alone! So afraid!”
Dom reached for me, clasping my hands with his, lightly
jostling the basket with my goods. He fell to bended knee and
placed his forehead on the back of my hands, still clutched in
his, as he became more dramatic. “I promise, it was just one
time! That orc meant nothing to me! Nothing!”
