MEMPHIS MCCORVEY
“Are you gonna go inside and get ready for Grandma’s funeral?”
While pulling from the blunt, I ignored my little sister at first. She was
in my fucking business on a day I didn’t need anybody minding my fucking
business. It was all I could do not to find a nigga to put my hands on. This
anger and aggression inside me were begging to boil over.
“And you know Daddy doesn’t like you smoking. It gives Mama a
headache if she smells it.”

Fuck my pops if I was being for real. Nigga needed to worry about the
hoes that were going to show up today to pay his mama their respects.
Meanwhile, they had no respect for the woman who birthed me. They were
the reason I’d come to hate disrespectful ass women just as much as I hated
disrespectful ass niggas.

“Nikki, go back inside,” I told her. This blunt was getting me right. The
longer she stood here, she’d blow my damn high.
“I’m not leaving until you come inside with me.”
As she talked, gravel crunched beneath someone’s stride. Glancing
back, we both saw my closest nigga, Boston, coming up the driveway. He
wore a scowl, and it was directed at Nikki.

“Go put some fuckin’ clothes on!” he barked.
Nikki smacked her teeth. “Boston Kelly, I’m not one those girls you
mess with for you to be talking to me like that. Mems, get yo’ friend before
I cuss him out.”

Both Boston and I thought that was funny. Nikki wasn’t the type to
“cuss” out anybody. That was partly because she knew all she had to do was
call her big brother, and I was coming to clear shit out.
I dapped Boston, then addressed my sister. “You do need to go put some
clothes on, baby.”

This time when she smacked her teeth, she stormed off with a growl.
“Bruh, I’on know how you do it. I wish my fuckin’ sister would come
out the house in some shit barely coverin’ her fuckin’ ass!” He yelled that
last part to get Nikki’s attention. Without looking back, she flicked him off
and continued up the long ass driveway circling my parents’ property.
“What you doin’ here all dressed up anyway?” I asked him. Boston was
my homie since middle school. We clicked the moment a nigga tried to
bully my sister and Boston beat that nigga’s ass like a drum.

“Had to come support my nigga, the fuck. Besides that, you know Nana
McCorvey was my baby. I couldn’t miss her day.”

Her day had me fucked all the way up. I was too old to not understand
that life ended. Whereas I thought my grandmother would live forever,
cancer came along and proved a nigga wrong. Taking the most precious and
loving part of me was like taking my damn breath. I loved no woman above
my grandmother. Not even my mama, and I loved her to death. My
grandmother was just…different.
