The Sheri
Present Day
Men in love were fools.
At least it worked in his favor.
The lovesick monster Luca had raced from his keep the moment he had
healed, and, along with him, the annoying green dragon that had plagued
the place for weeks.
Gustav hadn’t been able to make a single move until the beast had
vacated the premises. It was a bloody miracle the sheriff had survived after
the blasted dragon had attacked him.
Gustav limped through the halls of the monster’s castle in the dead of
night. The flower he’d been tasked to procure—wrapped carefully, root and
all—was in the satchel at his hip. A shiver ran down his spine, and he
gritted his teeth, not slowing his pace. There was something about this place
that bothered him. Maybe it was the torn paintings, the broken mirrors, or
creepy gargoyles that seemed to glare at him from above.
It was too quiet.
Gustav had been raised in Lord Merjeri’s keep. The place was never
silent. This castle seemed like the stones held the bloody secrets of the
past.
The hair at the nape of his neck rose as he finally crept from the castle
that resembled more of a crypt. Someone was watching him.
It’s your imagination.
He pushed against the keep and scanned the moonlit meadow for
several moments. No one was in sight.
Unease roiled in his belly, and he broke out in a sweat. He needed to
leave now. His lord had been waiting far too long for the flowers as it was.
The sheriff straightened and hustled toward the ledge that crossed the
river. No matter where Gustav turned, he was in danger. He’d take his
chances with his lord. At least he wouldn’t tear him apart with his bare
hands.
Don’t count it out.
That was the thing about the heir to the Merjeri province. Ruslan was a
brute, a knave, and a viper, which Gustav enjoyed as long as it wasn’t
directed at him. But there always was the chance that he could turn on you.
One part exciting, one part terrifying.
Which is why, at a very young age, Gustav had made sure to become
invaluable to the heir. Had he committed despicable acts? Yes. Had he
received power beyond anyone else in his station? Yes.
In the end, it was worth it.
Because the fact of the matter was, Gustav was lowborn with the
smallest traces of Talagan blood flowing through his veins. If anyone knew,
he’d have been in the fields with the rest of the shifters. Instead, he had
power, gold, land, and the support of the most powerful province.
And to a wily gutter rat?
It was everything.
