“Who’s my new mark?” I exhaled a cloud of frigid air, collapsing onto the
couch. Nik, ever the ice-hearted soviet, insisted on blasting the AC despite
the biting chill of October. The temperature hadn’t quite plummeted to
freezing, but at a bone-chilling fifty degrees, the air conditioner was an
unnecessary cruelty.

It was no surprise. Nik craved the cold. It transported him back to Mother
Russia, or so he claimed. The man may have come to the United States
when he was a toddler, but his desires remained rooted in Russia. If he
knew what I was thinking, he’d probably tell me to “zatknis’, chert voz’mi,”
a phrase that resonated with a dark ferocity. For the uninitiated, the
expression was a rough equivalent of “shut-the-fuck-up.”

Nik dragged on his cigarette, a coil of white smoke unfurling into the
frigid apartment air. I wanted to yell at him for smoking in the apartment,
but I knew better than to provoke him. The apartment was both of ours
technically, but it was clear which one of us held the power.

He held out a folder to me, his eyes gleaming with an intense fervor.
“Check the folder,” he commanded, his voice cold and resolute.
My eyes drifted downward to the inky blackness of the coffee table, now
marred by yet another ugly chip in the wood. Nik had a way of breaking
things. The sight of it aggravated me, but I hid my annoyance. My gaze
shifted to the manilla envelope, resting atop the battered table.
You’d think we’d have outgrown the need for such clandestine
maneuvers, but Nik remained tethered to his past like a dying man clung to
life. I lifted the manilla envelope, delving into its contents with
apprehension.

The contents of the folder appeared to be run-of-the-mill, nothing out of
the ordinary. He was younger than my usual marks, but I welcomed the
deviation from the norm. I’d grown sick of dealing with old men who
couldn’t satisfy their own wives, let alone me.

“He’s young,” I said flatly, scrutinizing the photo intensely. The man’s
photo stared back at me. He looked to be in his mid-twenties, with a crown
of unruly, dark brown locks and a hint of olive in his complexion. The
absence of wrinkles was refreshing. In the photograph, he stood alongside
two people, an older woman, likely his mother, and a younger girl, perhaps
a sibling. I studied the picture, noticing the stark height difference between
the trio. Either they were exceptionally short, or he was a towering giant.
My eyes narrowed warily as I turned to face Nik. “What’s the catch?” I
asked, my voice hesitant and suspicious. “How can he be my mark?”
Nik met my gaze, a smug grin tugging at the corners of his lips as he
carelessly snuffed out his cigarette on the arm of the couch, I bristled, the
sound of it grating on my nerves. He knew how much I hated when he did
that.
