THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA DURING LUNCH TURNED TO LOUD WHITE NOISE AS THE
kids got out their need to talk after being quiet in their classes for so long.
The noise rang in my ears, making it hard to think as I sipped from my juice
box, sitting with students I rarely talked to, being one of the more shy kids at
school, preferring the quiet.
I bit into my peanut butter and jelly sandwich, trying not to stare too long
at Hugo, the cutest boy I knew. Well, I didn’t know him, know him, but I
really wanted to. Even more, I wanted him to be my boyfriend. As soon as I
figured out I was gay, all I could think about was having a boyfriend while
every other boy was thinking about a girlfriend.
“Who are you staring at, Jo?” asked Jen, one of my friends. I wouldn’t
call us best friends, but she was one of the few kids I hung out with.
The magnetic pull toward Hugo was severed by my blond and browneyed friend. “No one.”
She jutted her chin over at the table where Hugo sat. “You don’t really
want to sit over there, do you? They may be popular, but they’re assholes.”
I hadn’t realized I had been holding my breath. The weight lifted off me
when I realized she was assuming I wanted to be their friend. I didn’t. Only
Hugo. If she caught on that I had a crush on him, my carefully quiet life
would come to a screeching halt. But it was something I had to prepare for if
I wanted a boyfriend.
Despite being caught staring, my eyes were pulled back to him, full of
want and need. It wasn’t something I was very familiar with, so it scared me
while also filling me with hope.
Hugo had thick, black hair falling in large tousled waves over his cute
face, and his eyes shimmered like wet pale stones, between brown and gray.
His skin was tan, with lots of freckles on his face and a really cute button
nose, all of which made his eyes stand out. I chewed my lunch with my head
resting on my hand as I sighed, watching him laughing and punching one of
his friends in the arm, and wishing I got to sit at his table. Though, I could do
without the arm punching.
I shouldn’t have been staring so much after Jen caught me, but there was
no escaping his orbit. He was a planet, and I was the moon, traveling around
him. So close, yet so far. My mind drifted, recalling all the times he’d
actually noticed me.
