“It’s a fake,” Katherine said with complete confidence. She knew the
dark-chocolate-colored music box currently held out before her was
a fake the instant she saw it, but she’d had to put on a bit of a show to
demonstrate her expertise so that her client, Ms. Paulson, wouldn’t simply
dismiss her opinion.

Katherine was in her late thirties, tall and thin; too thin, according to her
late mother, and wore jeans and a jean jacket, both of which were far too
informal for her line of work—antiques—but she couldn’t be bothered to
class it up. Not anymore.

She was standing in a former drawing room, now show-room, of a bright
and airy Victorian. The walls were a tasteful cream with a lavender fleurde-lis pattern. Two huge display cases stood against each wall. They
contained dozens of antique music boxes of various shapes, sizes, and
styles. All were very rare, if not unique, in pristine condition, and therefore
very expensive.

“I beg your pardon,” the short man complained. He was dressed in a dark
gray pinstripe suit and bowler hat. He stood to Katherine’s right and was
already turning red with frustration. Or maybe it was embarrassment now
that she’d called him out.

He had a tired face, likely from years of hiding from all the scams he’d
pulled on people. His hat covered a thinning scalp. Katherine suspected he
wore it solely to lend an air of vintage authority to his demeanor.
She’d never understood why some men wore concealing headwear. We
can all see it’s going. Why try to hide it?
She had to fight not to roll her sea-blue eyes. “I said it’s a fake. Want me
to repeat it in Spanish? Greek? Latvian? Actually, scratch that. My
Latvian’s pretty much crap.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t understand,” said Ms. Paulson, who stood across from
her. She was in her mid-thirties, a little on the short side, a little on the
portly side.

Katherine could see that Ms. Paulson was deeply disappointed, but didn’t
want to lie to the woman and allow this jerk to make a quick twenty grand.
“It’s not a goddamn fake!” The man stomped his foot. The music box
tipped, but he managed to maintain a secure hold.
“Are you quite sure, Ms. Norrington?” Ms. Paulson asked, her eyes
darting between Katherine and the man.

“No, she’s not frickin’ sure, ’cause it’s not a fake!” the man declared.
Katherine threw a glance to her right, inviting Ms. Paulson to join her.
Katherine held up a finger to the man. “One sec.”
“Anything you’re gonna say to her, you can say to me,” the man
complained.
