On the Road (Again)
LEXI
I was never a hopeless romantic. More like a hopeful romantic. That is
until now.
Also worth noting is that I’m not typically an angry person. I’ve
been told that I’m rather sunny, actually. However, my inner matador waves
his red flag, taunting me, daring me to push on the gas pedal.
As I see it, I have two choices.
Drive my car straight into the broad side of the brand new, shiny RAM
pickup truck or go south.
The “Beast,” as he calls it, belongs to Dirk, captain of the Yahoo Crew.
That should’ve been a warning bell, but I never hear them until it’s too late.
I’ve been at this adulting gig for over ten years now, and somewhere
along the way, during my misinformed youth, I thought that on days when I
wanted to wear the pink socks with frills, I could wear the pink socks with
frills and no one would give me a look. You know, the judgy and
disapproving one. Or when I craved cookie dough for breakfast, I’d feel just
fine by lunchtime.
Or, when your lying, cheating, and STEALING ex does you wrong, you
could smash into his vehicle like a monster truck at a rodeo.
That would also destroy my classic Plymouth Duster. The thing is on its
last legs anyway, but I kind of need it.
This would be the moment for vengeful, savage song lyrics to come to
mind. If I had my druthers (not sure what those are, but that was the word
that appeared in my brain’s vocabulary bank, so we’re going with it), TSwift and I would duet and sing our bleeding hearts out.
It’s not a big stretch for that to become a reality. At Club South of Sugar,
she bopped in once while I was behind the microphone. Even with the stage
lights in my eyes, she glowed with her own aura and not so much as an
entourage. Just a friend, as if the two of them casually agreed to go check
out some music at a local club on a Tuesday night like normal people.
Never mind the fact that I was the one singing. Nothing ever became of
it other than that I was starstruck. Actually, thunderstruck is more like it.
But as I tried to make my way in the biz, the guy I trusted to get me in
the door with the music machine moguls betrayed me by giving the song I
wrote, “I’d Run into the Storm for You” to my biggest rival, Suzie Lou
LeMonde.
If only it were easy to “Shake It Off.”
Instead, I drive off, leaving the Nashville nasties in my dust. Dirk can
thank me for not totaling his truck. It’s not that I’m particularly
heartbroken. More like there’s a scratch there. But I can’t think about that
now because I’m nearing my second loop on the city beltway and need to
decide where to go. Plus, Dusty, so named because it’s a Duster, and Dusty
Jones is one of my favorite classic country songwriters, is a gas guzzler.
