“Beam me up, baby!” Katherine shouted with her hands cupped
around her exuberant smile. She knew using that pun, based on
the classic sci-fi show, Star Trek, was about as far from hip as she could get,
but she didn’t care. She was in a silly mood this fine Friday evening, and
besides, Kirk, her deliciously cute boyfriend, always introduced himself as
“like the captain,” so she figured if he was going to do it…
Her dark, wavy hair bounced all over her shoulders as she jumped up and
down in front of the stage. Every few seconds, the frantic concert lighting
danced across her face, making her sea-blue eyes sparkle.
She was at the shoebox-sized Le Soleil club in the Reed College area of
southeast Portland, Oregon. The establishment consisted of the stage, large
enough for half a band, and standing room for maybe twenty more people.
There was also a combination bar and snack counter, and that was it.
She was there to support Kirk, who was on drums for the funk-blues-rock
outfit Rodekill. While she wasn’t a giant fan of the name, she had to admit
that it was far superior to a previous incarnation, the Dolphins, which Kirk’s
coworker, Shane, had alerted her to during a job several weeks ago. It was
during that job, even before Katherine and Kirk had started dating, that
she’d told him she’d love to see him play. While she had been flirting, it
was also a sincere request.
The job had been the first step in her assessing, moving, and selling the
antiques of Blackstone mansion, a massive, abandoned house hidden away
in the foothills, about ten minutes’ drive from the town of the same name.
She’d talked her way into the position with the estate’s owner, Jordan
Blackstone, a spoiled rich kid by day and part-time DJ by night.
Ug, Jordan. He’d been an enormous pain in her ass since the day she’d
first spoken to him, from his capricious whims regarding what to do with
the mansion to his tendency to threaten to send his lawyers after her
whenever he was in a cranky mood. Which was often.
One whim included an almost completely impromptu Halloween party
held at the house, tossed together only the previous week, after which she’d
been temporarily hospitalized for three days. Amid the party’s chaos, three
Blackstone family spirits, Gloria, Vernon, and Reginald, had thrust upon her
visions of their last moments in life and, after enduring the nightmarish
experiences, she’d woken up in an ambulance, with Kirk at her side.
Jordan, of course, knew nothing of his ancestors’ ghosts’ intrusions into
her mind. How could she ever share such a thing? Not only was he her boss,
not her friend, but she’d found it difficult enough to share such things with
Kirk.
She threw Jordan a glance. He stood a few feet away, swaying to the
music with the rest of the crowd. He was tall and handsome, with
fashionably mussed hair and tailored clothes made to look like he’d bought
them from a thrift store. He had his arms around his current squeeze, Fae, a
