5 Years before
The warm aroma of spices wafted past me as I walked the snowcovered path towards my parents’ home built inside of the mountain
that overlooked this town. Instead of entering their home, I kept walking to
the right until I reached the armoury.
As I entered, my eyes adjusted to the lit cave where gold armour
glistened. The walls were lined with various pieces, including gold lycan
masks and pieces for our arms and legs. The armour was special in that
when we wore them as humans and shifted into our lycan forms, they
would mould to our transformed bodies.
Suddenly, my father entered the room I was in from a door that led
deeper within this cave, and he closed it, locking it behind him. “There you
are, son.”

“You wanted to see me?” I asked as he walked past me, only stopping at
the mouth of the cave, his massive form almost engulfing the whole door.
The room he just walked out of held the blood of the first lycan. It was one
of many secrets kept from outsiders.
One of my favourite secrets was the healing cave. The beauty inside was
unmatched and it was the only way to properly heal from the faerie bone
blade wounds. The cave was filled with glowing mushrooms, an experiment
gone wrong. Luna, the first lycan, created them in hopes of creating poison,
but instead, they healed us.
With his back to me, he leaned against the doorframe. “I think you know
why I asked you to find me.”

I examined a mask that was closest to me, trying to keep my voice even.
“I have no idea what you’re even talking about.”
He turned around and looked at me. “Your mother and I need you to find
your mate. I know you are having fun with Sasha and Lou, but I need you
to be the king I know you can be.”
As the mask spun in my hand, the low light bounced off it. “I don’t know
what you expect me to do. If my mate isn’t here, she isn’t here.”
“Go to the North. Lycans live in peace amongst the vampires there.”
A chuckle left me as I set the mask back in its place. “You know, if I
were to step foot in any of the other kingdoms, it would cause a war. We
wouldn’t be neutral anymore.”

He didn’t look away. “Fine. But you need to find her quickly. Your
mother and I would like to step down from the throne and watch you take
your rightful place.” His hand came down on my shoulder. “Come. You are
on patrol duty today.”
