Choosing what to wear for my first kidnapping was more difficult than I
had expected.
I stared at the contents of my wardrobe, biting the tip of my fingernail.
The various fabrics and colors blurred together. Was it best to wear a dull
color—perhaps beige, brown, or black? Or was something more vibrant a
better choice? I reached for my bright yellow spencer jacket, held it up in
front of me, and stood in front of the looking glass.

I grinned at my reflection. A giggle escaped my throat.
Yes. Yellow was the perfect choice. I needed to ensure I was noticed.
The yellow spencer with my bright white gown beneath it would be sure to
catch my father’s eye from the window of his study when my kidnapper
swept me away.

My heart raced as I slid my arms into the long sleeves of the jacket and
fastened the buttons. Charlie, my elder brother, had already sneaked my
trunk to the carriage that would be waiting beyond the treeline—the one
that would take me to my hiding place in Northumberland. I had only
packed a few items in order to make my disappearance appear accidental. A
kidnapper wouldn’t allow me to bring all my favorite gowns, now would
he? As frightening as the ordeal was, I felt like a ninny with the smile that
was plastered on my face. How much time did I have? I checked the pocket
watch on my writing desk.

Good.
I still had time to write the beginning of the story.
Nestling into my chair, I dipped my quill, touching the tip to a fresh
page in an empty book. I had only written fictional stories up until now, but
I had a feeling that my upcoming adventure would be worth documenting.
My real life had always been too dull to write about. But the novels I had
written were full of danger and romance and secrets. Finally my life was
about to include at least two of those things.

I rubbed the feather across my lower lip. How should it begin? I
couldn’t very well write it as a novel if I had no idea how the story was
going to end. Perhaps these writings would serve me better as a diary of
sorts. If I took notes about all my experiences, then I could draft it all into a
novel when the adventure was over.

I gave a swift nod, agreeing with my own logic as I came up with a title.
This entire adventure was about the year leading up to my twenty-first
birthday, so I titled it:

Nora’s Coming of Age Diary
June 27, 1816

Yellow is a rather cheerful color to wear on the day of my kidnapping, but
most young ladies, I imagine, do not have the chance to prepare for a
kidnapping the way I have. That is a dreadful thought. Speaking of dreadful
thoughts, with each day that passes, Papa makes further plans for my
marriage to Mr. Verwood. I shudder to even write his name.
If there is to be a villain in this story, Mr. Verwood is the only suitable
character—besides Father, of course.
