THE BACK tires slid again, kicking the old truck out to the side. Damn and
blast. George should have paid more attention to the tires when he’d bought
the thing in Cheyenne.
He was in real trouble. The snow was getting heavier and the highway
more dangerous. The roads would only become worse the longer he was
out. He knew the highway was probably in better shape than the surface
roads, but he’d still prefer to find an exit to get off this damned thing onto a
regular road where he might find a place to stay. He kept hoping that he’d
drive out of this mess. He was heading west, and didn’t the weather come
from that direction?
But the snowstorm seemed endless, and the terrain was
unfamiliar. Back home they didn’t get storms like this, but if they did, he
knew the land almost as well as he knew himself and could practically drive
blindfolded. But that was there, and while it was home, the walls had begun
to shrink long ago, shaping themselves into proverbial bars and a door that
he didn’t want clanging shut behind him.
When he’d started out, this little adventure was supposed to be a lark, a
chance to get away somewhere he could think for a while and maybe have
the opportunity to be the man he was inside—the one he saw himself as.
But first he needed to get the hell out of this weather and off the
freeway. Find some shelter and a warm place for the night. Then maybe he
could have a chance to decide his next move.
He leaned forward to read a road sign through the blowing snow, then
eased over to the exit that read Covington. Okay, it was at least a town. He
took the snow-covered exit ramp and turned right onto a surprisingly clear
road that led into the town, three miles away.
Three miles. It was starting to feel like a million.
George’s hands ached from gripping the wheel, and he had to go
something fierce. There was no one around, so he put on his four-ways and
pulled off. The truck slid to a stop. George closed his coat around himself
and opened the door. He instantly regretted it, but nature called and he had
no choice.
He trudged around the other side of the truck, which acted as a
windbreak, unzipped, and made fast work of the task at hand. Relief washed
through him. At least that was one less worry. He zipped up and was
hurrying around to the driver’s side when movement across the road caught
his eye—a dog, slinking along the gully.
The skinny thing crossed the road
and went down the other side before disappearing. He followed her quickly
and found a dry culvert under the road. The dog lay at the entrance in a nest
of sorts with four pups scurrying up to her.
“Jesus H. Christ,” he muttered.
