Jennifer “Jenny” Hartmann didn’t know if she should scream, cry, or
maybe do a little of both.
Pounding the heels of her hands against the steering wheel, she
muttered, “How could you do this to me, after all we’d been through?”
As if her twenty-year-old car could hear and reply.

True, she knew it needed to go to a mechanic. A little red light had gone
on about three weeks ago. However, ever since she’d been laid off from her
teaching job last year and had been forced to move in with her sister, she
hadn’t had money for much of anything, and certainly not for fixing her car.
And yes, she shouldn’t have attempted the mountain when it was cold,
about to snow, and had a POS car to boot.

But when her brother-in-law’s family had offered their mountain cabin to
Jenny for a week, to give her time to think about what to do with her life and
finally stop wallowing, she hadn’t been able to pass it up.
Not even her sister’s usual sarcasm about her car being such a great offroad vehicle had changed her mind.

Nope, Jenny had wanted—needed—to have some peace and quiet.
Mostly, she wanted to stop thinking about her money troubles, about her
asshat ex-boyfriend, or how she couldn’t find a job doing the thing she loved.
So she’d chanced it with her car—ol’ Bess, the name her stepdad had
used for it before giving it to her on her nineteenth birthday—and had lost the
roll of the dice.

Looking down, she checked her phone again. But nothing had changed—
there weren’t any bars, and the battery was dangerously low.
Oh, and yes, she’d forgotten her charger too.
When did I become this scatterbrained?
She knew the answer, but wasn’t going to head down that road again. Her
ex, Corey, could kiss her ass.

Scanning the surroundings, she ignored the falling snow and hoped for a
side road, or sign, or anything to tell her she was near some kind of
civilization.
Otherwise, she’d have to stay in her car and not freeze to death until
someone else risked the icy roads.
Shivering, she sighed and tossed her useless phone into the passenger’s
seat. Think, Jenny, there has to be something you can do besides sit here and
become a human popsicle.
There was a tourist town along this road, although she didn’t know how
far away it was. If it wasn’t snowing and the sun wasn’t an hour away from
setting, she might’ve walked and chanced it.
