Chios, 1088
I saw lights on the coast. Long rows of distant candles,
threaded along a rocky shoreline. They glimmered through
rolling tides of sea-mist, which slowly melted under the blaze
of dawn.
Then I smelled the burning. Have you ever smelled roasting
human flesh? It is hard to describe. A little like bacon, sizzling
on a griddle, or leather being tanned over a flame.
“Saint Peter,” murmured my companion. He made the sign
of the cross. At the same time cries of horror and dismay
rippled through the fleet.
Ahead of us lay the island of Chios. We were approaching
from the north, towards the castle and town on the eastern side
of the island. It was a fair dawn in high summer, when the
islands of the Aegean Sea – the Mare Aegaeum, as the ancient
Romans used to call it – look their best. The sea was deep blue,
while the rising disc of the sun poured golden light over the
rocky hills to the east. These stretched away to the south, until
they merged with the retreating shadows of night.
The hills were lit by torches. Scores of them, mounted on
the tops. They had probably been burning for hours.
Mercifully, the victims had long since fallen silent.
“The Dragon bids us welcome,” said Constantine. I glanced
sidelong at him. His face was striking, thin and gaunt, with a
long hooked nose, cleft chin and sharp cheekbones. So sharp,
his concubine used to jest, she cut herself on them. A hard
face, suited to its owner. I had never seen him weep before.
