137 years later…
THE GROUND HAD BEEN coated with the blood of humans and fae
alike. This was nothing new for the war we had been living in for the last
century. For most of the humans fighting, it was the war that began with
their grandparents. My father had told me the war truly began the day I was
born. That was the day the queen decided to claim her revenge for the
deaths of her father and brother. At first thought, I couldn’t blame her. If
someone harmed my own father, the king, I would want to destroy
everything in my path as well. It just never should’ve gone to this extent.
One hundred and thirty-seven years, the realm had been cursed with the
blood of those who were not responsible for the events that led to the death
of the Lord and his son. The mortals alive today should not pay for the sins
of their ancestors when they weren’t even alive to commit these heinous
crimes. The queen’s stance on the war would never change, my father had
told me time and time again. His compromise to the war was that he was
able to keep me—his “bastard” daughter, the queen referred to me as, just
never in front of a soul. In front of others, I was the “unfit” captain of the
armies for her war.

make up for it. It still never seemed fair; I spent my earlier years watching
the queen with her own children, born years after me. I watched how she
would gently brush their daughter’s hair and rock their sons back to sleep
after terror had found them in their dreams. It took me years to come to
terms with the fact that she would never accept me for what, or who, I was.
Even before her children were born, I would receive nothing but doors
slammed in my face, being forced to eat alone in my chamber or be
reprimanded cruelly for little offenses, such as sneaking out into the gardens
past dusk.
I would never forget when I was not but thirteen years of age and was
caught sneaking into the queen’s personal bedchamber. I just wanted to use
some of her beautiful hair brushes. I sat down at her vanity, pulled the brush
through my long, dark hair once, and looked up to find the queen glaring at
me through the mirror with a scowl carved into her face. She then dragged
me by the tip of my pointed ear all the way down to the stables.
Once there,
she had Callius, her henchman for all intents and purposes, take a whip to
my back three times as punishment. The pain was excruciating, causing me
