It unfolded out of the woods. The trees lining the driveway peeled back like
a curtain, revealing a gnarled, twisted and crooked house. Shutters hung
loose from the windows, banging against the slatted boards in the breeze.
The porch wrapped around the ground floor, covered in dry, dead leaves, a
few dancing up in the air. The house had once been white or cream, but all
the freshness had long since faded, replaced by a dirty, grey wash, having
withstood years of battering.
Win Adler didn’t know if her father noticed her take an involuntary
shiver, but she instinctively wrapped her arms around herself as their car
crunched to a halt on the driveway. He let out an exhale and peered at her
over his glasses.
“We’re home,” he announced, giving her a heavy pat on the shoulder.
“God, it’s not so bad Win. Your Mother grew up here. Remember?”
“Yes, but she left,” Win remarked smartly, earning an eye roll from her
father, who was climbing out of the driver’s seat. “With you, if I remember
the story correctly.”
“I stole her away.” He laughed, a slight sadness resting in the corners of
his eyes, a memory had conjured up old feelings. “It’s a great town, Win. I
grew up here too, you know.”
She hopped out of the front seat, stretching her long, jean-clad legs. Her
lower back ached from the long drive, and as she took the opportunity to
stretch, she let her eyes roam around the property. They were in the middle
of nowhere. Dense woodland surrounded them, tall red pines shooting
skyward, shielding them from prying eyes. Win knew there were a couple
of acres on her grandfather’s estate, and she hadn’t been here since many
Thanksgivings ago. It wasn’t often her father wanted to make the drive
from Boston. The last time she had been here was when they said goodbye
to Rowan. That had been five years ago.
Win turned and found herself looking back at the porch, and the old man
standing in the doorway. Tall and broad, he had a long, grey beard, with
tufts of white hair swept back off his tanned face. He wore a pair of cut-off
jean shorts and a wrinkled checkered shirt. He met Win’s green eyes with
his, and she saw the smile there. He strolled off the porch to the back of the
car where her father was unloading the bags; he didn’t see the older man
appear until he slapped him on the back.
Win stifled laughter as her father jumped with fright.
“John! You scared me.” He forced a laugh. “Still know how to creep up
on me, huh?”
