Now…
Rain is crashing down through the darkness, pounding the car as I rev the
engine and try again to spin the wheels free. The car shudders and dips
slightly to one side, but I’m still stuck in the muddy track that passes for a
road out here in the middle of the Cornish countryside. I rev the engine
again; I know I should probably try to calm down a little, but I’m filled with
this frantic need to just keep going until I get to my destination. There’s no
standing still on this journey; if I’m not going forward, I’ll start slipping
back.

“Come on!” I hiss, revving the engine again and again. “Just -”
Before I can finish, the car jolts forward. I know this is something
of a miracle, but I’ve finally managed to get free. As my headlights burn
through the pouring rain and pick out the so-called road ahead, with a low
brick wall to the right, I start driving again. I’m gripping the steering wheel
tighter than ever, but I know I can’t stop. I can’t even slow down.
Somewhere in the distance, nestled in the storm and the rain-ravaged
Cornish countryside, Clute Cottage is waiting for me.
And after that? I genuinely don’t know if I’m ever going back to
Candleward.

A few hours earlier…
“I don’t know what you mean,” I stammer, as I once again feel a rush of
panic surging through my body. “Nathan, what’s this all about?”
“You turned up here out of nowhere,” he replies, “and when you
crawled out of that lake, you weren’t yourself.”
“I think -”
“It’s more than just a hunch,” he adds. “Mercy, I need you to be
honest with me. You were someone else for a moment back at the lake. You
talked about yourself in the third person. You looked at me like someone
else entirely.”

“I was just flustered,” I tell him, “and -”
“Bullshit!” he replies, interrupting me. “I’m here for the truth, and
I’m not leaving until I get it. Who are you really, Mercy Willow? And who’s
Jessica?”
“Who?” I ask, trying to sound innocent and confused.
In truth, I’m panicking and I need to buy myself some time to
think.

“Who’s Jessica?” he asks again. “When you crawled out of that
lake at Gower Grange, you claimed for a few minutes that your name was
Jessica. You acted like Mercy’s an entirely different person.”
“Well, that was a joke,” I tell him.

“A joke?”
“Yeah, you know…” I try to think of some way to make this
explanation more convincing. “I was clearly just trying to be funny. It was a
pretty tense situation and I thought we could all do with a laugh. You know,
like…”
I wait.
He stares at me.
“Ha ha?” I add.
