CALE
“CALE, WHAT FUCKERY HAVE you gotten yourself into this time?”
“I. . .” My mouth opened and closed like a fish as I stared at my mother
for the first time in over ten months. She stood shorter than myself, with
frazzled dark hair and circles beneath her brown eyes.
“Never mind, get in the house.” She ushered me in and eyed Gil as he
lowered his head to step inside. Before she closed the door, she turned her
‘open’ sign to ‘closed.’ Some people wouldn’t be getting their herbs, spell
charms, or potions today.
Her home was exactly as I remembered it: warm from cooking, with
wreaths of dried flowers and bundled twigs or sticks tied with herbs on the
walls. A few bundles of dried flowers—jasmine and honeysuckle—hung
from the ceiling near the wall.
She closed the yellow curtains on the windows, then hurried to the
kitchen to pour us cups of water. Me and Gil followed her, taking the cups
as she stood staring at us, narrowing her eyes on Gil before coming back to
me again.
“What do you mean by this man being lord of Ashwood Manor?” she
started. “Ashwood Manor hasn’t had a lord in fifteen years.”
“That’s what I need to talk to you about,” I said, twiddling my fingers.
“Well, you may want to sit down.”
“I’m perfectly fine standing.”
Clearing my throat, I looked at the floor, then back at her. “Well, I . . . see
. . .”
“He got lost,” Gil broke in, his voice low and deep. “On his way to visit
you from Tolburg, it started to rain, and he went into Ashwood and found
my manor.” He stared at her boldly, without a shred of fear in his eyes. “He
was hungry, and he ate cursed food. He came into another realm where I’ve
been for almost fifteen years.”
My mother’s mouth fell open. Taking a breath, she reached back for the
chair at the kitchen table and fell into it.
“You were cursed?” she asked. When Gil nodded, she went on, “And my
son got dragged into it?”
I knew it wouldn’t take any convincing for her to believe this tale.
“It wasn’t his fault,” Gil replied. “But once he was there, he was part of
the place.”
“There were other people there,” I said. “They were all very nice.”
“And how, dare I ask, was this curse broken after such a long time?”
“Well, we . . .”
“Love,” Gil blurted out.
My whole body went rigid, and I held my breath as heat filled my face. It
had to look like a ripe tomato.
My mother let out a tired laugh. “Of course. How typical.” She cut her
eyes to Gil. “So you love my son, then?”
Gil raised his chin. “Yes. I do.”
“And you love him, Cale?”
Swallowing, I nodded. “Yes, Mother.”
She threw her hands up. “Well, I suppose I should be happy for you then.
