Kat Beckman pulled the blankets up under Jack’s chin as she sat on the
edge of his bed. It was a mother’s reflex. “I’ve got to go to the hospital now,
buddy,” Kat said, staring at his little face highlighted by the dim light from
the lamp with the trucks on it that he insisted stayed on all night.
“I know. You have to see Gramma.”
“That’s right. But Dad will be here and I’ll be back before you even stop
dreaming.”
Jack turned away from her as she pulled the blanket up over his back,
the sleeve of her sweater sliding down her arm. She quickly pulled it back
into place so she didn’t have to look at the scar. Kat’s husband, Steve,
silhouetted in the light from the hallway watched her cover up her arm, but
she was never sure what he thought. Kat pushed those thoughts out of her
mind.
Getting up from the bed, she walked out of the room as quietly as
possible. Steve followed her down the steps to the front door where her bag
was waiting.
“I’ll be back,” she said, Steve standing behind her.
“Kiss mom for me.”
“I will.” Steve gave her a peck on the cheek and Kat stepped out onto
the front porch. The night air was cool and damp. Rain had come to the city
of Aldham earlier in the day and the moisture was still lingering. It likely
wouldn’t dry up until the sun came out the next day.
Kat got into her car and pulled out of the driveway, checking to make
sure her overnight bag was stowed on the passenger seat. Jack’s toys
clanked off of the back seat and onto the floor as she took one of the turns
to get to Mercy Memorial Hospital. The noise of Jack’s toy truck careening
off of the back seat reminded Kat that she was spending yet another night
away from her family.
The nights away from Steve and Jack had become
more and more frequent as Laura’s cancer progressed. It had started in her
stomach and had moved to her liver from there. The newest treatment was
supposed to be working, but an immune system compromised by harsh
medication after harsh medication had put Laura in the hospital with an
infection and dehydration. Steve couldn’t bear having his mom spend the
night alone and Kat couldn’t bear to have Steve gone from Jack every night,
so they had been switching off.
Not that she’d been doing it willingly. Like most families who had a
loved one with cancer, costs were paid all around. The stress, interruptions,
monetary cost and emotional cost had taken a toll on the whole family and
her marriage. It wasn’t that she didn’t love Laura. She did.
Kat took the final turn into the hospital and tried to remember how their
life had been before Laura had been diagnosed. She had work that she liked
as a freelance journalist. Steve had his own consulting firm and they both
had plenty of time to spend with four-year-old Jack. Time to go to the park,
