Dillan leaned against the wall in the exam room. His mother hadn’t been
to the clinic in the small town of Horsehead, Texas, since the new
doctor had started. He’d heard that the doc was a woman, and he wondered
what she would be like.
His mom sat perched on the exam table, her hands clenched in her lap,
her small feet crossed. He’d brought her in today because her stomach had
been bothering her and, typical of her, she’d said that it was nothing.
All her life, she’d hidden her troubles. In the old days it was because of
his father, an uncaring and often violent man. She’d spent her days trying to
be invisible, hoping to escape his hateful attention.
His father had died a few years ago, and Dillan couldn’t have been
happier. His brothers had left home as soon as they’d graduated high school,
and they’d never looked back. He and his mom hadn’t heard a word from
them, and he wondered if they blamed his mother for the fact that she’d never
protected them from her husband. Dillan didn’t feel that way. It had been
obvious to him that his mother was just another of the bastard’s victims.
He thrust away from the wall as the exam room door opened. Then he
sucked in a breath as a beautiful blond rushed through the door holding a file
folder in her hand. After nodding to him, she smiled at his mom.
“Mrs. Mandell, I’m Dr. Cain. It’s good to meet you. I understand that
you’ve been having some stomach troubles?” She spoke briskly but met his
mother’s gaze, holding eye contact as she waited for a response.
His mom cleared her throat and nodded. “I’m sure it’s nothing. My boy
worries about me, is all.” She glanced at Dillan.
“She’s wrong. Her stomach’s been bothering her for several weeks. We
need to find out why,” he said firmly. Then he added. “I’m Dillan.”
Dr. Cain nodded. “Nice to meet you, Dillan.”
Then she turned back to her patient. “Wanda—may I call you Wanda?”
“Of course, Doc.”
“If it was nothing, your pain wouldn’t have lasted so long. Would you
please lie back on the table so I can palpate your stomach?”
His mother frowned.
D
“I’m going to feel your tummy,” Dr. Cain added hastily.
Dillan was impressed at how gentle the doctor was as she worked on his
mom. He also liked the fact that she kept smiling reassuringly at his mother,
who was always nervous when visiting a doctor.
His mom winced and cried out.
“I’m sorry, Wanda.” Dr. Cain said.
His mom nodded.
The doctor’s hands moved over slightly. “How about here? Does that
hurt?”
His mom winced and bit her lip to keep from crying out. She nodded
again.
Dillan noticed Dr. Cain frown, and he began to worry.
A moment later, she patted his mom’s arm and said, “You can sit up
now.” She looked at Dillan. “I’m going to schedule some tests for your mom
over at the hospital in Knox City. You’ll be able to drive her, won’t you?”
“Of course.”
Her eyes were the lightest color of hazel, nearly golden, and they sparkled
when she smiled. Energy flowed from her in waves, even when she was
standing still.
