I’m just getting off the phone when Xavier walks through the room with a
stack of what looks like tiny, colorful crocheted sleeping bags in his arms.
He pauses briefly to look at me when I make eye contact with him, then
scurries on toward the kitchen.

“Yeah, I’m still here,” I say into the phone, turning back to the
conversation I lost track of while watching Xavier.
“Okay, good. Thanks for agreeing to do this. I think it’s going to be great
for the inmates. They’re looking forward to meeting you. And some are
excited to see you again,” Darian James says through the line.
“Thanks for thinking of me. It’s an awesome opportunity,” I say.

“Anything I can do to help these guys.”
“I’ll be in touch soon with the details,” Darian says.
We exchange goodbyes, and the call ends. I follow Xavier’s path toward
the back of the house. He isn’t in the kitchen, but the door to the walk-in
pantry is open. I walk through the first room where the actual food is kept
in on to the second room. It was originally intended as a root cellar of sorts,
deep storage for stocking up and preparing for storms or big events. It has
been quite a while since it served that purpose.

Instead, the shelves lining the walls are now filled with Xavier’s
extensive collection of sourdough starters. Much of the time, the jars are out
in the world with him—hanging out in the living room, getting some sun
out in the yard, traveling back and forth between Harlan and Sherwood.
After a while, the young starters mature and get dehydrated so they can be
stored for longer. But when they aren’t having recreation time with Xavier,
in the kitchen being used for recipes, or stashed in powder form, they hang
out here. And apparently, now they have a new wardrobe.

Some of the jars are already sporting new crochet cozies, and Xavier is
comparing a couple of options for another jar.

“What’s up, X?” I ask.
“Cupcake sent some new cozies for the starter babies, and I can’t decide
if blue or yellow is better for Pretty Fly for a Future Rye,” he says.
“I think yellow. He seems pretty vibrant and cheerful,” I offer.
“You’re right. He’s the friendly one of the shelf,” Xavier agrees.
“Speaking of Cupcake,” I say, flipping through the remaining cozies and
finding a couple in the bubbly artist’s signature pink. “What would you
think of her coming to stay with you for a week? Here?”
He doesn’t even look up from carefully finagling the Mason jar into the
lemon-colored crochet bag.

“Why would she do that?” he asks.
“I’m going to be away, and I thought you might like to have her come
hang out with you,” I tell him.

“I have Nicole for that,” he says, finally getting the snug-fitting cozy in
place and returning the jar to the shelf.
“All right, well, I’m not sure exactly when it’s going to be, but it should
be pretty soon. Sometime in the next couple of weeks,” I tell him.
“I’ll fill out the time request and let you know what she says,” Xavier
says.
