Leaving Home
The train lurched into motion, and Aara experienced a moment of
weightlessness as her body joined the train, gaining momentum. Her heart
lurched with it, and something tore.
“Well, this is pretty nice!” Ife’s voice came from below her. Aara pushed
away the feelings and leaned over the rail of her bunk to peer down at her
best friend.
“Do you have enough room to sit up?”
Ife reached for the bottom of Aara’s bunk fingerbreadths above her head,
“Just barely.”
“Hmph. I probably couldn’t then.”
“Come down here anyway,” said Ife. “We might as well sit together for a
while, and I think my bunk has more headroom than yours. Besides, Willa
is down here.” They both cast a glance at Willa, still deeply absorbed in her
book, then at each other, smirking. Studying Ife’s familiar profile, a primary
anchor from her previous life, Aara felt a rush of affection and a pang of
anxiety. Tears stung her eyes, and she blinked them away. She was going to
miss Ife.
She shifted to climb down from her bunk. “Just give me a minute. It’s
kind of awkward to get around.”
She eventually made it to Ife’s side by straddling the two middle bunks
and then lowering herself down. They sat side by side and surveyed their
alcove again. The journeyman potter, his guild and status indicated by his
red-brown tunic, lounged on the bottom bunk, reviewing notes he had
written in a notebook. Going somewhere to buy or sell something for the
guild, Aara thought.
“So…” Ife began, “how are you feeling now that we are finally on our
way? Isn’t this exciting? I’ve never been on an overnight train.”
Aara shrugged. “Me neither, only the day train to Khuni when Mum
couldn’t find someone to watch me.”
Ife studied her, sympathetic. “But this is still not that exciting, huh.”
The overhead bunk wasn’t high enough to allow Aara to sit straight, so
she had to hunch over. She wriggled a little to get comfortable, not looking
at Ife. She wanted to be as excited about this adventure as her friend was,
but she couldn’t quite manage it. “I don’t know. What if I’m not a good
channeler?”
“Of course, you will be! That’s what you tested as, isn’t it?” asked Ife,
moving over to give her more room.
Aara sighed, but the air leaving her lungs didn’t loosen the tightness
around her heart. Ife didn’t understand what it was like to not belong
somewhere, and nothing Aara said would make her understand. She shoved
down an upwelling of irritation and envy. Ife was trying to help. “Yes… I
guess. Mistress Trea said I only scored a little higher in that one than some
of the others.”
“Did she mention which other trades you scored high in?”
“Forestry, woodcarving…”
“Woodcarving? Really? But that would mean you would end up on
Trivista.” Ife’s voice took on a teasing note. “You could become a child of
Illeosni.”
Aara shuddered at the thought of trying to fit in with the narrow religious
dictums of the Trivista Islands. “And forestry is on the opposite side of
Acrea… locked in ice and snow for nine months of the year, living in
trees…”
