KAIA
“We regret to inform you we will be letting you go from the firm. Please
collect your belongings from your office, and security will escort you to
your car.”
He said all of this without looking up.
“You’re firing me?” I ask, not sure I fully understood him.
My hands grip the armrests of the overpriced and incredibly
uncomfortable chair I’m sitting in. At least I was sitting when he told me. I
look up at Martin, the department’s managing partner, also known as the
man who just tilted my entire world on its axis. He’s sitting at his fancy
desk that overlooks the Space Needle, completely unbothered that he’s just
told me I’m being fired from the company I’ve put my literal blood, sweat,
and tears into for the past six years. Six. Years. He’s taken one minute out of
his day to throw the biggest possible wrench into my ten-year plan, and will
probably head out right after this conversation to an overpriced dinner that
he’ll bill to a client and never think about it again.
“I don’t understand. We had a department-wide meeting two days ago
and there was no mention of layoffs or anything.”
In fact, two days ago, I had been assigned a rather large and tedious
project, and I distinctly remember him trying to lighten the load by telling
me what an asset I was to the team, and that they were lucky to have me on
board.
“Kayla, I’m sorry to have to do this.” Oh, that’s wonderful. He doesn’t
even know who I am. I’m not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.
“It’s all got to do with seniority, billable hours, and client retention—it’s
out of my hands. But you’re a smart girl, you’ll find somewhere else to
work. We’re happy to provide a reference if needed.”
“It’s Kaia.” That’s all I can manage to say. I don’t say anything about the
insane amount of hours I’ve worked the past six years, or the fact that my
entire life practically revolves around this firm.
“Right, right! Kaia, I’m so sorry. I would love to stay and chat, but I
have a meeting in five minutes. Make sure you set up your exit interview
with HR before you leave the building today, and give them your personal
email. Your email for the firm won’t be active after today.”
“Sure thing,” I say through gritted teeth, fighting back tears.
“Oh, and don’t forget to turn in your key card on the way out, Maya. We
have highly sensitive documentation in this office, and we wouldn’t want a
breach of security,” he says while looking at his computer.
