It’s illegal in all fifty states to interrupt anyone mid-song, right?
Especially when I was bellowing—fine, crying—to Taylor Swift’s
“cardigan,” my voice lost in the crisp mountain air and endless pine trees.
And it’s definitely a crime punishable by death to interrupt Taylor’s
melancholy heart.
Alas, the forest ranger who pulled me over must not have been wellversed in the laws.
I bit my lip and slowly edged my car onto the shoulder of the road,
praying my little Altima didn’t roll into the ditch. But really, what was one
more dent?
I slipped my hair out of its bun, scrunching my nose at the strong aroma
of color clinging to it. Not a blonde strand was in sight, only chestnut waves
as I brushed it over my shoulders. I peeked in the rearview mirror as the
white truck behind me opened its door, getting a flash of the Law
Enforcement sign plastered on the side, along with the brown Forest
Service badge.
Wait. Was a forest ranger even allowed to pull me over?
I reached in the back seat and grabbed my denim backpack to retrieve my
license, jumping at the abrupt tap on my window. Blowing out a deep
breath and slapping on my best smile, I turned and cranked the window
down. It screeched with each wind of the handle, resembling a mewling cat
being mauled to death. I didn’t dare let my smile break.
I was not going to break.
“Hi, Officer—Ranger—sir . . .” What the heck do I call him? “How’s
your day—”
“Are you aware I trailed you for a mile before you finally pulled over?”
I furrowed my brows at the deep voice, positive I hadn’t been that
oblivious. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize.” I smiled brighter, the sun’s rays
blocking me from seeing if it was getting me out of this. “I’m new in town
—I must’ve been so focused on not missing my turnoff that I didn’t see
you.” I hitched my thumb over my shoulder, where a small cabin sat off the
side of the dirt road. “And it actually looks like I missed it—but just barely,
thanks to you, Officer.”
I squinted and leaned against the door, unable to view the man’s face. I
waited for a response, maybe a laugh—even a polite question asking where
I was traveling from. But all I got were two large tan arms crossed over a
sturdy chest. He exhaled, his frame not loosening one bit. “Are you aware
you were doing fifty in a twenty?”
I frowned, gripping the peeling steering wheel. I’m going to light you on
fire, Betsy. “I’m sorry.” I sighed, dropping my hands to my lap. “Betsy was
reliable in getting me here, but I can’t say she’s without her faults. I thought
I noticed her speedometer being a little wonky, but I thought maybe I was
seeing things after driving for twelve hours.” I laughed, shaking my head.
