THE MAN DREW her eye.
Tara wasn’t one to stare—for her handmaid had always counseled her
against such bold behavior—however, as she walked along the bustling
pier, this stranger was striking enough to make her look away from where
fishermen hauled in their catch of live crabs, winged skate, and silvery
mackerel.
The man weaving his way through the crowd was tall and broadshouldered, with a thick head of rich auburn hair that brushed the collar of
the fine quilted gambeson he wore. He walked with the confident swagger
of a warrior, a dirk swinging at his hip.
Tara’s gaze narrowed. There was something familiar about him, and she
wondered if they’d met before.
As he drew close, she scrutinized him. His eyes were an unusual shade
of green. It wasn’t dark like pine, bright emerald, or moss—but an earthier
fern-green. He had proud, aquiline features and full lips that looked as if
they smiled easily.
Aye, she had seen him somewhere, yet she couldn’t remember when or
where.
Marking her stare, the stranger looked at Tara then, those sensual lips
curving, not into a smile, but a knowing smirk.
Heat rolled over her, and she immediately cut her gaze away.
The Saints forgive her, it had been a mistake to observe him so frankly.
Tara quickened her stride, relieved when she’d passed the smirking
stranger by. Aye, he was handsome enough to make a lass lose her wits, yet
he was clearly a knave. She didn’t know when their paths had crossed
before, but she hoped she wouldn’t see him again.
Glancing over her shoulder, Tara focused instead upon the heavyset
woman with a red face who followed a short distance behind with three
warriors at her heel. “This way, Orla,” she ordered briskly.
“Aye, I’m right behind ye, Lady Tara,” her loyal maid puffed, quickening
her step.
Sighing, Tara tried to swallow the irritation that now tugged at her.
Orla was a good woman, who’d been with her since childhood, but Tara
often felt smothered by her presence. She wished she could have made this
trip to Tobermory with just her guards in tow. They’d taken her father’s
birlinn the short distance east along Mull’s northern coast from his fortress
of Dùn Ara, for she wanted to pick up some red ribbon to finish off her
wedding surcote.
Can’t I have just one day to myself before the wedding?
A new life awaited her, and although she was keen to do her father
proud, there was a part of her that quailed at leaving everything she knew
behind. Today, she wanted to indulge her love for shopping a little and
forget she’d soon be Callum MacDonald’s wife.
At the thought of the gruff young man whom she barely knew, Tara’s
mouth thinned. A moment later, she checked herself. Daft lass. This
marriage is an honor … never forget it!
