My world was going to Hell in a handbasket in a literal way. I’d
effectively blown up my love life with Abaddon since I wanted to be loved
for me and not by someone under a compulsion to want me. Demons might
look at things differently, but I had forty human years under my belt and
only a few weeks of being aware of my Demon heritage.
And what a few weeks it had been.
Trying to avoid being killed and keeping my dad and brother safe had
become my full time job. Living a double life as a human actress and a very
reluctant Demon Goddess was complicated. Whatever. It was what it was.
And now? Now I was doing something else I didn’t want to do.
Outside the restaurant, I gripped my trusty truck, Judy’s steering wheel
and debated not going through with dinner. There were paparazzi
everywhere. It made me itchy. I had no clue who was at the restaurant to
cause such a fuss. I was tempted to text Slash and make up a lie to get out
of it, but I’d just have to reschedule. Slash might be lacking in the brains
department, but my ex-husband was persistent. Plus, I didn’t break
promises even if they were disgusting.
“Nothing to worry about.” I checked my reflection in the rearview
mirror and gave myself a pep talk. “They’re not here for you, Cecily
Bloom. You can slip in under the radar, eat some sushi, listen to Slash’s
bullshit and be done with it.”
While acting made me feel whole and I adored it, I’d never loved the
crap that went with it. Being famous came at a high price. The loss of
privacy was the worst. Not that I was all that famous, but if the new TV
show went according to plan, the vultures would come crawling out of the
woodwork.
“Smile and walk fast,” I told myself as I got out of the truck. Lowering
my chin, I walked like I was living in New York City—quickly and with
purpose.
The flashes from the cameras were blinding. Two aggressive jerks with
pornstaches blocked my entrance to the restaurant. I looked around to see
who in the hell had shown up. No one had shown up. I found it very
difficult to believe they were here for me.
“Cecily,” someone yelled from behind me. “This way! Show us that
beautiful smile, babe.”
I was not his babe. But what I didn’t want was to be on the front page of
the tabloids with a surly expression. Keeping my eye roll in check, I turned
and gave the turds what they wanted.
“Is it true that you and Slash are back together?” another leach shouted.
My smile felt brittle on my face. I was going to skin Slash alive when I
made it into the restaurant. He’d obviously called the vultures with a tip on
our fictional new relationship status.
