“We need results!”
I hit my palm on the table in front of me, causing papers to fly around. The
loud snap makes everyone nervous. That’s exactly what I want.
“Sir, we are working on it—”
I level the vice president, who started to talk, with one look. He settles back
into his chair, his mouth snapping shut. Good.
“You are not working hard enough. You are not pushing your people hard
enough.” Grabbing the remote control in front of me, I pull up images on
the screen. Everyone swivels in their seats.
“Look at that. Look at those babies. These are children who did not do
anything to deserve the conditions they were born with. Some of them will
be dead in days. Some in months. If they are lucky, they’ll have a few years
with their families. It only takes one crisis! One!”
I flick the images off, not wanting to stare at them any longer. My hand
goes to my thigh. I rub slightly, trying to mask the motion from anyone else.

The pills used to help. There was a point in time when they used to bring

earned my degree in business management and finance and then an MBA,
both in about five years. But I also have extensive personal research which
has taken me all around the field of hematology and back.
I focus again on the executives in front of me.
“This department was created to help a special subset of people. You have
been doing clinical trials and research for decades. Yet, you still do not have
anything to show for it.”
None of them meet my eyes. I’ve been told by people that my stare is too
intense. I should tone it down. Honestly, I don’t care. I’ll gaze at them
intensely if that’s what it takes to light a fire under their asses.
“I have half a mind to shut you down already and be done with it.” It’s not
an empty threat. My employees know I do not make empty threats. “We
cannot keep pouring research grants down the drain.”
I pause, my breath short. My chest is aching now. I try to take a calming
breath.
I recognize the symptoms. I know what could happen any minute from now.
Taking a deep breath, I rise to my feet as swiftly as I can. My body feels
like it is burning beneath all the pain. “You can all go now. And get…me…
re…”
