“Bye, honey,” I called softly so no one but my seven-year-old
daughter would hear.
I didn’t think the embarrassment phase was supposed to happen so
early, but she had made it clear she wanted me to be cool with the
endearments at her new school. Olive turned around quickly and flashed me a
smile. I watched her hoist her purple and yellow backpack onto her shoulders
and scrape her long, unruly blonde hair out from underneath it.
She
tentatively smiled at another girl her age, and they struck up a conversation I
would have given anything to overhear. I kept watching as they ambled
inside the building, finally noticing the teacher in charge of the drop-off line
waving frantically for me to get moving. I waved apologetically and rolled
forward, craning my neck to try to get one last glimpse as I rounded the
curve. I spent the short drive to work worrying if Olive was settling in all
right, if she was making friends, if the teachers watched over them well
enough during recess.
As soon as I pulled into the parking area in front of my bakery, a
whole new set of worries set in. But these were also prickling with
excitement. I hurried through the small shop, flipping on the lights and
prewarming the oven for the next batch of muffins and cookies and bread.
Hopefully, there would be a need for the next batch of everything.
I turned on
the three computers in the internet café portion of the place, fluffing the
pillows on the second-hand couch against the wall, and needlessly
straightening the chairs at the four round tables closer to the checkout counter
and pastry display case.
It would only take me a few minutes to put out
everything I’d been baking at home since four that morning, and I wanted to
get the doors open as soon as possible. With a last, proud glance at the handpainted Grand Opening sign in the glass front door, I turned it around and
flipped on my neon sign, an extravagant expense, but one that completed my
vision. My dream of opening my own bakery was now about to become a
reality, and hopefully it wouldn’t be a flop.
I feared that opening after eight would make me miss a lot of early
morning customers, but there was no way I could let Olive take the bus. Too
many things could happen. Who would notice at the school if she didn’t show
up one day, lured off at the wrong stop? It might be hours before…
I shook my head, forcefully putting the past in the past.
This was a
new life and the blazing pink neon sign that glowed in the big picture
window of my bakery was proof of that. After I unlocked the door, I propped
it open and looked up and down the sidewalk. I was lucky to get this place,
right in the middle of town.
